Hooray, hoorah and huzzah for teh bbc.
They archive everything, everything I tells ya!
As a kid one of the noises I was most frightened of was probably kept in the bbc radio sound effects library and labelled as 'spooky space noise no.34'. I was introduced at an early age to the fantastic story of Captain Andrew 'Jet' Morgan, 'Doc' Matthews, 'Lemmy' Barnet and Stephen 'Mitch' Mitchell; as they Journey'd into Space, To the Red Planet in fact, accompanied by the ever present and terrifyingly voiced 'Whittaker'. From about the age of eight, my heart stopped every time I heard it, and since my Dad had it on tape, I heard it a great deal. I quite liked to be scared.
The taped box set (which were taped off the radio, and kept in a cardboard box) are still with us, or at least, my Dad still has them, but I haven't listened to them for ages, and despite the fact that I knew that another series existed, a previous series about a Journey to the Moon I had never heard it. Last night something made me think of it, so off I went to the web, looking to see if I could buy it anywhere, if it was still available in any form.
To my most pleasant surprise it was, and it is. Not only that, but I found a website which will let you listen to the whole lot; 'Operation Luna', 'The Red Planet', 'The World in Peril' and even the 90 minute special that came years later 'Return from Mars'; in order, episode by episode, AND, it'll let you download them!
I now have a piece of my childhood (albeit a slightly scary piece!) on my computer. I started listening to it immediately. (I was listening in bed with the lights off, and I had to turn them on when one of the noises freaked me out!)
So here be the link, and off you go, at least to listen (I highly recommend it) if not to download the whole thing. (I think it might only work in Realplayer format, at least, that's what I've got it in!)
