RELATIONSHIPS

canon relationships

Sora
Kingdom Hearts

"Every time I felt like I couldn't go on, or it seemed hopeless, I'd hear your voice. And that was the encouragement I needed to keep fighting."

Kairi's best friend, and someone she would do anything for. Though she's the one usually prompting him up from his naps in order to get things done, and teasingly chides him for being lazy, she's seen Sora in action when his friends are in trouble and knows she's in good hands with him-- that's why she sought refuge in his heart. There's also a crush there, but ultimately, Kairi shares a deep bond of friendship with Sora and will always be with him, as she's promised. She's just glad she's got some additional time to spend with him now before they go back home and end up separated again. She'll never stray from Sora's side while she's here, at least.

Riku
Kingdom Hearts

"This world's definitely a step up from the islands."

Kairi's other best friend, whom she would also do anything for without a second's hesitation. While she may not necessarily agree with Riku's harsh training methods, what truly bothers her about her friend is that she can't be entirely truthful with him, as he's from an earlier time and has yet to know what he'll be going through. She's seen what will become of him, and still worries that one day, he'll remember that and they'll lose the happiness they have now as a trio of best friends traveling this world together. At the heart of it, though, Kairi appreciates Riku's support and trusts him with her life. He's always fought to protect her, after all, and he gets to put up with her affection for as long as she puts up with his noogies and headlocks. There may also be a faint crush there, because-- really, it's Riku.

Terra (Dropped)
Kingdom Hearts

"Even though my friends and I were separated, we had a bond and as long as that bond existed, I had to protect it."

Terra was the first person Kairi met in Johto, which meant she was brokenhearted when the guy she saw as her big brother finally went home. Until then, he'd kept her safe through blizzards and long treks, always forging onward and looking out for her-- even when he was worried about other things. Kairi will always think that he's a truly strong person, and isn't at all surprised to find that he and Riku were also connected. She's just hoping she'll get to see him again one day, so she can thank him for taking care of her.

Aqua
Kingdom Hearts

"I put a spell on your necklace. So that if you got into trouble... your Light would seek out someone else's, to keep you safe."

If asked, Kairi would say that Aqua is the one person she owes nearly everything to, after Sora. It was Aqua who saved her in Radiant Garden, and who put the spell on her necklace-- the one that brought her to the Destiny Islands, and subsequently to Sora and Riku. She's also everything Kairi wants to be-- graceful, intelligent, beautiful, skilled, and able to keep her boys in check. She really does view Aqua as an older sister figure and wonders about that miniature Keyblade she got from her, having no clue that she's the one who inherited that power from her.

Ventus
Kingdom Hearts

"Maybe Sora's got a heart hotel or something."

Ven's neverending friendliness and easygoing smile remind Kairi a lot of Sora, and she was surprised to learn of his fate-- not that she doubts he'll be okay, because she was just fine in Sora's heart, but to hear that this boy and her best friend were this deeply connected has only strengthened her faith in bonds. She knows how much Sora looks up to him as an older brother, and likes Ven a lot, enjoying her talks with him when they get the chance.

Naminé
Kingdom Hearts

"I don't want to forget everyone again, not when... I finally made friends."

Kairi's Nobody, not that she knows this. While she does feel some kind of strange connection with Naminé, she has no idea of the girl's true nature or just how they're connected. But she views Naminé as a good friend and is constantly encouraging her in her endeavors, whether it's asking someone to a festival, being more confident in herself or just speaking up in general. She really just wants to see her friend happy, especially when it sounds like she's had a hard time making friends before this.

Mickey Mouse (DROPPED)
Kingdom Hearts

"It's kinda funny how fate ties everyone together like this."

While Mickey may not be around anymore, the information he provided Kairi with gave her new insight to her past, such as where she'd come from and what had happened to her with the Unversed and Aqua. She's eternally grateful to him for that, and misses him deeply, now that he's gone.

Minnie Mouse
Kingdom Hearts

"So that means I'll be counting on you when they're at your side, to keep them in control."

... She had no idea Minnie was a queen, but once she learned of this, Kairi wasn't too surprised; Minnie's presence is not only motherly, but queenly, and she really does feel like the group mom for all of the KH kids. It's not hard for Kairi to confide in her at all.

Leon
Kingdom Hearts

"The important thing is you're safe. Sora and Riku are going to want you in one piece, after all."

Kairi's first impression was that of a stern and strong guy who was all serious business-- which was understandable, as he was keeping her safe in Traverse Town while Sora went forth to battle darkness. But since coming here, she's gotten to know him better, being able to spot the strength of his heart and how kind he genuinely is, as well as his more teasing side. It may be because Kairi's the more calming influence on Sora and Riku, but she didn't really have an authoritative presence (sans adopted family) until... well, Leon. And Leon can definitely make her feel repentant with just a LOOK. She definitely looks up to him, and has grown pretty fond of him-- if asked, she'd call him a brother figure. If she ever goes back to Radiant Garden for good, she'll do her best to be the kind of Princess that she thinks he expects her to be. She's just glad that he's finally gotten to know her as Kairi and not just a Princess of Heart.

Aerith
Kingdom Hearts

"Only a few hours? Why not the whole day~?"

Aerith is a very kind and warm presence, but she's got that aura that states that she is probably the scariest out of the whole Radiant Garden crew when she needs to be. She and Kairi were having girly bonding before Aerith went home and, when she returned, she'd lost her memories of being here-- not that this will stop Kairi from renewing and strengthening their friendship all over again.

Vanitas
Kingdom Hearts

"Well then, Kairi, it has been an... interesting chat."

Vanitas is... complicated, to say the least. Being around Kairi seems to render him oddly civil, and he's displayed (extremely gruff) concern and helped her out on one occasion and they've both been interested in learning the legends of this world. However, one simple fact remains true: he's hurt Sora, and Kairi can't bring herself to trust him when he so obviously loathes her best friend and has no qualms fighting with him. But she can't bring herself to hate him, either-- that's just not how she rolls. Her best friends just come first.

Data Riku
Kingdom Hearts

"There's only one place I can be."

Riku's lookalike who isn't really Riku, but is actually data from a journal-- yeah, it's complicated stuff to Kairi, but she's decided to just view him as someone who isn't Riku, instead being his own person. He may believe his purpose is over, but she believes he can still set new goals for himself and has already offered friendship. He's a nice guy... book... after all.

Xion
Kingdom Hearts

"Friends."

It would be a lie to say that Kairi was entirely A-OK with the uncanny resemblance between Xion and herself, but it's not enough to prevent her from befriending the quieter girl. They've actually become good friends by now, and every conversation they have is enough to make her smile. She'd love to get the chance to meet Xion in person one day, just to get to know the girl even better-- there's a lot about her that's still shrouded in mystery.

Marluxia
Kingdom Hearts

"How could I forget the season when the plants start to grow again?"

A man who really likes flowers. Kairi doesn't know much about him beyond that, and the fact that he's familiar with Sora, which she's taken to mean that he's a nice guy. ... Really, she has no idea.

Yuffie
Kingdom Hearts

"He's been practicing his frown too much lately? I'll just have to try my best in fixing that then."

Yuffie is energetic and lively, guaranteed to be both fun and able to do something about Leon's perpetual lineface. Kairi may not have known her for very long back home, but she's doing her best to make that up here. Even if Yuffie teases frequently, she really is a lot of fun, and Kairi's well aware that she can get down to business when the situation calls for it.

route relationships

Hiccup
How To Train Your Dragon

"Hi, Kairi. The future snowball thrower.

I'm Hiccup, your soon-to-be victim."

Hiccup has really good ideas!

... Unfortunately, Hiccup also has horrendous luck and tends to end up in situations where girls try to set him on fire. Kairi, however, wholeheartedly believes in him and is constantly fascinated by his tales from home-- their worlds are completely different, after all. He does tend to be cynical at times, but she's usually right there with her optimism, encouraging him to brighter views.

Valeria Myles
Final Fantasy VII

"I guess you could say I'm pretty easily satisfied so long as my friends are happy."

A very pleasant woman-- just the kind of lady who radiates "COOL BIG SIS". Kairi's met her in person and found her to be just as nice as she was over the gear, and the two of them have the same concept of happiness. If there's something bothering Kairi that she can't go to her best friends about, she will most definitely approach Val for an older woman's opinion.

Kaito Kuroba
Detective Conan/Magic Kaito

"You're on your way to becoming your own magician."

Kaito's been extremely helpful since the beginning, whether that involves filling her in on Johto intricacies, cheering her on, or teaching her magic tricks. She really enjoys his cheeriness and sense of humor, though she still feels awful for not remembering him-- she practices the trick he taught her every day in the hopes that it'll be another memory she can cling to when she goes home. He's such a nice guy; it's not fair to him that she's forgotten being friends with him twice now.

Yuffie
Final Fantasy VII

"You can't fool me, you sweater fiend!"

Another Yuffie-- albeit a different one, this Yuffie is still just as rambunctious as the one Kairi's more familiar with. There are still differences, of course, but the mischievous nature and her ability to keep a bright grin in spite of a lot of things is 100% Yuffie. It wasn't hard at all to become friends with her.

Sazh Katzroy
Final Fantasy XIII

"I've seen some pretty crazy things, but other worlds? Didn't even think that was possible."

Kairi's Daddy Figure, and let no one else say otherwise-- he just gives off the father vibe, and that just gives her a sense of security. Kairi might pout when he pulls the adult card on her, but she actually really looks up to him and is willing to take into consideration a lot of his advice and suggestions. She's also thrilled that he's been improving in terms of optimism, and she's rooting for him and his Pokémon to get along because Sazh is the nicest person ever. Which is why she's still pretty horrified when she heard about his history, because he really just wanted to protect his son and he didn't deserve any of that. She'll continue to remind him that he's great, because she fervently believes this.

Cruz Schild
Needless

"Strength of heart... I've never heard of that term before."

Cruz is simultaneously hilarious and incredibly kind, though he doesn't seem to have as much faith in himself as he does in his friends until Kairi's said otherwise. She can tell that he's got a strong heart and that he cares deeply for his friends, just as she does. ... And she did temporarily mistake him for a girl when she first met him, but that part's staying a secret. She's just happy to have a friend in Cruz, and was even happier when he offered that friendship first.

Talim
Soul Calibur

"There are so many things here to see! You've got me curious, at least."

Talim's a sweetheart and, despite the two of them not knowing each other that well yet, Kairi views her as a friend and is planning on cheering her on in any and all of her Gym battles. She's another person she'd love getting to know better.

John Egbert
Homestuck

"It's nice to meet one of his friends! Especially his best friend!"

Kairi actually doesn't know John all that well yet, but he's already shown that he's extremely fond of his Pokémon, and he just so happened to know Riku. And any friend of Riku's is a friend of Kairi's-- she'll be making sure she speaks to him more often, though it'd be nice if he didn't get hurt again while on the road.

Karkat Vantas
Homestuck

"Seriously, get over yourself. You're like. Dense and mildly irritating, but that's about it."

Originally, she just wanted to be friendly at him because he was Feferi's friend and YAY NEW FRIEND, but then Karkat kind of threw a bucket of ice-cold, muddy water on her enthusiasm. A lot of what he says both confuses and fascinates her, and occasionally she's been hurt by what he's said, but there have been moments that have given her insight on Karkat actually having a soft and squishy center. What he went through sounds painful, and he even admitted to her that he likes being here. She's determinedly trying to remember everything he's told her to prove that she thinks it's something important, and does view Karkat as both likable (if abrasive) and a friend-- he's made it obvious that he does care about her, if just a little. Will continue to Disney at him 'til the cows come home.

Rarity
My Little Pony

"I can pay you back - if you'll give me your measurements, that is."

In return for a raincoat, Rarity volunteered to make Kairi an outfit, leading her to discover that her new friend actually owned a boutique back home and was planning on setting up shop in Johto. She even offered to teach Kairi how to fashion clothes, something that she's really excited about. ... Because when you grow up with boys, you don't get to have as much girly bonding time as you would have liked.

Daisuke Niwa
D.N.Angel

"I probably won't go fishing ever again."

Kairi's first experience with a Ditto was with Daisuke's, when they attempted to teach it how to talk-- they've become Pokémon buddies, happy to show each other their Pokémon, no matter how weird they are (giant fighting beetles and banana-growing tree dinosaurs and all). And really, she just has fun talking to the guy, rarely focusing on anything deep or dark, just lighthearted conversations. She'd really like to learn more about him.

Claire Bennet
Heroes

"I don't mean to sound like a cynic but I'm amazed the Pokémon haven't taken over everyone."

Claire seemed just a little wary about being in Johto at first, so Kairi does her best to help her out with anything she can. Of course, she genuinely enjoys talking to the older girl about anything and everything, but there's something that's been worrying her. Because Claire breaking her arm and then saying she was perfectly fine and that it didn't hurt... is not normal. It's got her wondering, but she won't be asking. In time, she'll most likely come to view Claire as an older sister.
