Pat Buchanan submitted a further addendum that because homosexuality was outlawed previously and that, because he lumps it in with other things considered immoral (abortion, stem cell research, euthanasia, cloning and promiscuity), the US is no longer a moral country.
There is two fine points that need to be addressed regarding this; (1) at one time, homosexuals, like adulterers, lied to their spouses because law was based on a biblical text interpreted by men who didn't want it around, and (2) adulterers, by the very definition, are liars.
Human beings are social animals, we survive through cooperation and open communication in a careful balance against the more primal aspects of territorialism. For society to exist, people must adhere to a common list of behaviors that promote healthy society. These were codified into religious texts so that there was an external agency that could "monitor" a persons behavior even when they were alone.
Territorialism is related to resource control and acquisition and also protection of the gene pool. However, man, in his ability to think and the imposition of the churches desire to have a mighty pool of parishioners and missionaries, took protection of the gene pool and perverted it, encouraging as many children as possible and declaring any behavior or role that did not support that position as immoral. You can view the role of the woman as solely a vessel of childbearing and homosexual who cannot produce children themselves in this manner.
Basically, to the church, and any rule of law based on religion, anything that does not promote children is wrong. Look at the fervor over abortion and the use of aborted fetuses for stem-cell research but nary a peep from the religious community on fertility treatments which regularly produce extra fetuses that are routinely destroyed simply because the base concept is more children.
Homosexuality is no longer about lying and cheating on your spouse. It is a common feature in nature and is prevalent in nature because while homosexual animals are less willing to create a family, they are born into them and can serve as additional protectors of the herd, born as homosexuals because their herd has enough child producing members. And there is nothing wrong with that in the least.
To take it a step further, I would submit that homosexuals make the better warriors because of these ideas.
Point. Morally, separately from religion, homosexuality is good for society and good for protecting the gene pool. Lying is immoral because it corrupts the ability of a society to function properly. So if being a open homosexual means that you are not lying and being truthful about yourself then homosexuality is not immoral.
