Anyone want some grapes?
Free to a good home, or bad home, or just a cardboard box under the overpass.
We are rapidly approaching harvest season. My parents will not come back to Maryland for another month, so will miss the first half of harvest. Given that I will not work harvest alone (yeah yeah, the team of latinos that usually do the picking are people too, so wouldn't actually be alone), I will most certainly, without the slightest pangs of guilt (well maybe just a little), let the whites go.
The chardonnay and sauvignon blanc should come ripe at the end of the month, but nobody will be around to pick. So, if you want a few tons of grapes, I might consider getting a bunch of people together to head down to the farm one day for a light-hearted no pressure just pick at your own pace harvest. Meet up around DC, pile into as few cars as possible, and head out to the eastern shore of Maryland.
Since the middle of the day is too hot and miserable, we should just pick in the afternoon and evening - so leave DC around noon or one - head out, pick in the afternoon, back to the house on kent island for some dinner, maybe if we have the motivation we can actually pick enough to make a small batch of wine...
maybe the 23rd or 31st depending on the sugar and acid levels of the grapes - need to check this weekend to get a better idea of when.
Any positive mumblings? Not going to hold you to it right now, just want to know if I should bother getting ready or just totally abandon the white grapes.
UPDATE: These are not table grapes; the seeds make them hard to eat, so its either jam or juice for these things. If everyone wants to pitch in to make a batch of wine, those who help will get a couple bottles in the spring (no promises on quality though).
