"Seiichi," Renji calls softly, and when Yukimura looks up from the library book he is reading, he holds out his hands over their shared table.
Yukimura arches an eyebrow at the red string twined around his best friend's hands.
"Cat's Cradle?" he asks in a low voice, the smile dancing in his eyes, and Renji nods solemnly.
“You know how to play,” Yanagi says. Not a question, but Seiichi answers anyway.
“I do.”
And then Renji, rather than speaking, looks at him meaningfully. Seiichi almost laughs, but doesn’t because this is the library and one mustn’t laugh in the library. He slips a bookmark into the text, and then reaches out to the loops around Renji’s fingers. He pinches at the red Xs, slips them under and up, holds the formation, widens his fingers, and then smiles impishly at the other boy.
In return, Yanagi’s lips curve up in the slightest grin.
They play, then, and play, and play, the complexly simple designs of thread passing from hands to hands until they begin to experiment with the formations, pinching this instead of that and doing that instead of this.
Which is all well and good until Renji gets their fingers all tangled up, knotted together with red string and hardly able to move their hands.
Renji blinks.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen,” he murmurs to himself, and Seiichi can’t help erupting into a fit of quiet giggles, at which point the librarian comes over, helps them untangle a hand each, and then boots them out.
As Yanagi and Yukimura walk out, Seiichi is still laughing and Renji is still trying to pick apart the knots that join his left hand to his best friend’s right.
“Oh, leave it,” Seiichi eventually says, still smiling, and swings their clasped, twined, knotted hands back and forth.
Renji smiles, and they walk sedately into the sunset.
