Title: Character Sketch - Kirihara Akaya
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Characters: Kirihara, Yanagi
Disclaimer: I claim no ownership of Prince of Tennis.
Notes: General character sketch originally done for English class. I tried to edit it, but there's a lot to edit about it, so... Meh. The title sucks, yeah. Bite me.
Kirihara Akaya slumps at the table, one hand in his wild, wavy black hair and the other tapping a pencil against the textbook. His green eyes are concentrated and he frowns deeply. To his right, Yanagi Renji sits patiently, quietly, waiting for the 14-year-old to finish the exercise that he has been spending the past five minutes on.
Finally, Akaya gives a frustrated grunt and pushes the book away.
"Don't get it," he says petulantly to his tutor, scowling. "Doesn't make sense."
Yanagi nods placidly, pulling the book back over to him. "Which part?"
The younger boy makes a wild, vague gesture with his right hand, the one with the pencil. "I dunno. All of it. What do I have to take this subject for anyway? I'm gonna live in Japan for the rest of my life."
"English is required through the twelfth grade," responds Yanagi, still calm. "Now pay attention."
Yanagi launches into the explanation, each word careful and precise enough that Akaya wil understand. Not that Akaya is by any means a slow boy; he is bright, when he wants to be. Even now, Yanagi can see the comprehension dawning in his underclassman's eyes as he absorbs all that his tutor has to say.
"...Understand?" Yanagi finishes, and Akaya nods once, sharply, before he begins to redo the exercises.
Yanagi sits back in his chair and listens to the skritch-skritching of Akaya's pencil against the paper, averting his eyes to the clock on the wall. Akaya hates it when he reads over his shoulder and corrects the mistakes as they go along.
"Finished!" comes the pronouncement after another ten minutes, and Yanagi leans over again. The work is better this time; there are only a few mistakes, and they are the hard ones that Akaya is not expected to catch.
"Very good," Yanagi replies, smiling warmly at the student, and Akaya beams back.
"It's easy," he replies, waving his hand complacently, but Yanagi can see the secret delight in his eyes.
"Mmhmm. Now. Can you do these?" Yanagi points to several more translation problems in the book, at which Akaya groans.
"We're not done yet?"
Yanagi smiles. "Certainly not. You should continue practicing until there are no errors whatsoever."
"But -- "
Another smile as Renji cuts him off. "Consider, Akaya: If you were to discontinue attending tennis practice -- which I realize you would never do -- would you ever be as good at it as someone who had simply continued?"
The answer is a mutter: "No." Akaya sighs dramatically. "Fine, fine. I'll do the problems."
"Thank you."
Akaya snorts a little, but Yanagi stays firm, and they set to work once more.
