It took awhile for Duo to realize that the neighbor's cat wasn't stalking him. Of course, Duo thought he could be forgiven for his oversight, since most of his training went to analyzing enemy troop movements and not the hunting habits of felines. But he was years out of training (not out of shape), and much more occupied with trying to paint the picket fence around the front yard evenly.

He and Heero had, when they first bought their home together, always talked about putting up a fence, a cheesy white picket fence, just like in all the classic movies they watched on vid. Well, Duo had been the one to say it and Heero had been more occupied with exploring Duo's collarbones at the time. But then Heero bought the home improvement books, and they started to talk about what types of wood to use and then Heero was shot and died and Duo went insane for a little bit and so the fence was forgotten.

It was during one of Duo's fits of lucidity (well, that was debatable) that Duo had fenced in their front yard in one day. The next day, Wufei had to call of the missing person's report, Quatre ushered the exhausted American back to his estate, fired the guards assigned to watch over Duo with prejudice, and Trowa took another leave from the Preventers for a few months.

But the fence stayed and it actually, you know, worked. For a fence. Which meant it had to be painted. So Duo handled that, the warm sunshine streaming down, and he would've been sweating terribly if it weren't for Heero staying so near, his chilly presence doing much more to soothe Duo than an ice cold lemonade.

The neighbor's cat had made his appearance early on, watching Duo with a bored expression and sitting on top of the section of fence that Duo hadn't gotten to yet. He only hoped he didn't have to fight the cat to get it to move its furry butt.

I think you're going to need more paint to finish off this part.

Duo nodded absently, sitting on his heels as he carefully drew his brush along the edge of a post. "Do you think you can stir up the paint again? It gets kinda thick and lumpy..."

It wouldn't do that if you actually closed the lid between coats, Heero returned, sounding amused, and Duo stuck out his tongue.

"Waste of time! Why should I have to wrestle with that stupid lid every time? I damn near dumped the whole lot down my shirt getting it open in the first place."

Lazy, Heero admonished, but his presence drifted off towards the paint can and Duo shuddered when the full force of the afternoon sun hit him. Duo leaned back to sit on the grass, squinting at his handiwork when he noticed the neighbor's cat again. It was sitting up intently, not sprawled out like a fat furry rug. Duo thought the cat might be stalking his braid again (it had taken a swipe on more than one occasion), and eyed the cat just in case. But the cat wasn't looking at Duo, but off to the side, where a paint stirrer was mixing slowly through the half-empty can of white, seemingly of its own accord.

"Hey... Heero?"

What is it?

The cat's ears twitched.

"I wanna try something. Can you walk to the front door and back?"

Heero grumbled a little, his presence wavering a bit. But the paint stirrer stopped its movement. Do you want me to do a song and dance, too?

Duo grinned. "I wouldn't say no to a strip tease."

Heero made his way as Duo had bid, and Duo watched as the neighbor's cat tracked every inch, its slitted eyes narrowed in Heero's direction and fur fluffed out.

"Well, I'll be damned..."

Now what? Heero asked, his cool presence once more encompassing Duo.

"I think the neighbor's cat can see you."
