"Brother?"
Ed blinked, shaken out of his contemplation at the sound of his younger brother's voice. Not lowering the book he was holding, he nonetheless inclined his head in Al's direction. "What is it, Al?"
Al hummed, Ed twitched, then Al sighed and licked his lips a little, his posture betraying nervousness. Ed finally set the book aside when he noticed the strange reaction, giving his brother a worried look. "Al? You don't have to--"
"No! No!" Al interrupted quickly, raising himself up a little to look into Ed's eyes. "I don't mind. It's not about that!"
Ed pouted. "Then what made you stop?"
"Just... has Mother been giving you any strange looks lately?"
Golden eyes blinked slowly once, then twice, and Ed's brow furrowed. "Why would Mom be giving me weird looks? I didn't break anything. I even fixed that squeaky hinge on the backdoor."
"It's just..." Al hesitated again, and Ed had to stroke his back gently to urge the younger boy on. "Well, I think she knows."
Al's eyes flickered over to the new radio in the corner, that was currently broadcasting the afternoon program. Ed followed his gaze, as if having forgotten the radio was on, and turned up rather loud, so the music drowned out all other noise. Ed's brow furrowed again as he thought, then he shook his head.
"That's ridiculous," Ed snorted. He stroked Al's back again. "Mom knows that we play music to help concentrate when we study, and so she doesn't interrupt us."
"But, brother...!"
Ed stroked Al's back once more, trailing his hand up to Al's pale blond hair before tangling his warm fingers in it. "Come on, Al. If Mom really knew, I think she might do more than just give us funny looks. We're perfectly alright."
Al still looked uncertain, but finally wavered under his older brother's confident attitude. Ed gave Al a brilliant smile, petting his younger brother's hair once more. "See? I'm right. Now let's get back to what we were doing."
The younger Elric nodded happily, and as Ed picked up his book again, Al lowered his head to Ed's lap, kissing bare skin and flesh once more. Ed sighed in contentment, stroking Al's hair with one hand and holding his book with the other.
And the radio played on.
