There's the sensation of something ghosting over his cheek and this time Mathias reaches up and crushes it in his fingers, feeling the burning sap leak into the creases of his hands.

Heart pounding, sweat standing out on his brow and soaking his shirt, he glances at Stacy. She's beside him again, like the past two times before and he feels a helpless sickness rising in his throat. Veronica and Webster are in the tent, but he can already hear them coming outside, opening the flap and coming to join them and he can't believe this is happening again. Three times now. He's already lived this three times and he wonders what horrible thing he's done in his life to be living this over and over again. What he's done so wrong that the people he cares about most are forced to be here with him.

He isn't prone to anger, but right now he's furious. He drops the crushed flower to the dirt and forces himself not to reach for Stacy's hand and drag her down the hill this time. More than anything, he wants to give up, he wants to sit down in the clearing and close his eyes and go to sleep, but he doubts that will help any more than his rash decisions up until this point have helped. What he needs to do is take some time to just think.

Jeff isn't going to save them. Jeff is dead. He needs to accept this.

He still doesn't know what to do, not yet, but he knows that they can't rely on anyone else right now. They're the only ones who can make sure they get out of this alive.
