There's the sensation of something ghosting over his cheek and, without even opening his eyes, Mathias lifts his fingers to flick it away

Standing there in the heat, her feet aching and her hands shaking the moment the world tilts back into focus, and her first thought was no. It didn't work the first time, look what happened, but Jeff was always their salvation. He was always the one who knew what to do. Always the leader, and all she could to was nod dumbly, reaching for his hand and murmuring, "Okay. We'll get Jeff."
Veronica's heart is in her throat as she pushes her way out of the tent and to his side. Everything's starting over and Mathias moves like he's just fine, uninjured, but she saw it, watched the knife drive into him, powerless to stop it, to help. There hasn't been time enough to process it, to recover, and now he's fine.

I barely have time to rub at my eyes when I realize that I'm still here in this godforsaken nightmare. After all the goddamn things I've been through, now I get this? I push out of the tent and follow along, knowing what we're marching towards if not careful. "Just tell me what you want me to do," I say to Mathias, ready to accept orders at this point and just follow them like I'm falling back in line again.
"You said to change something," Mathias says to Webster, still walking, refusing to stop in case they lose precious seconds. "We get to Jeff before the Mayans do and we bring him back up here. If we save him, maybe that will be enough to change everything."
Because he doesn't know what else to do. He hates himself for hoping they can change this, remembers telling Stacy not to hope because how terrible being wrong feels, but he can't stop himself. Not with all their lives on the line again.
"Please, Veronica, just trust me," he asks softly. If he needs Stacy to believe him, he needs Veronica to trust him and he's afraid, right now, that he has neither.
