So today started off pretty well. I got to work early. We were goofing off a bit around the office. It felt like a Friday. Also, today was when I was to meet with Matthew from TEKSystems (the recruiting place that helped me get a job with Max Processing). Apparently after 30 days on the job, they meet back up with all their clients to see how things are going, as well as give feedback that they've gotten from the bosses.
Well, I leave to meet Matthew and Craig (a coworker from out of town or something?) for lunch at Buffalo Wild Wing. Just before I get to my exit, I notice smoke coming from my engine. I find this unsettling but thought maybe it was from a truck in front of me or from the rain or something. Then I look at my engine temp gauge and it's darn near the upper threshold. I start freaking out. I turn my heater on full blast (a surprisingly useful tip I remembered from driver's ed) and it helps a little, but I still see poofs of smoke every once in awhile. I take my exit and find a little side street out of the way and pop the hood. My first car was a Caddy with a radiator leak and this all seemed awfully familiar. Sure enough, there's green antifreeze all over the radiator. I call Jeremy and freak out. We had JUST spent over $300 fixing my car LAST WEEK thanks to the starter going bad. Now this! And around lunch time and I know he has to go to work early afternoon and is supposed to be DMing in Durham that night!
I inspect the car a little further while I'm in the phone with him and realize what's going on. There's this magnificent RIP on the side of a hose leading from the radiator. The smoke/steam must have been from the coolant spraying the hot engine.
As we sit there trying to figure out the best course of action, my phone yells at me that it's about to die. EFF. And I'm still supposed to meet Matthew for lunch! But I can't just leave my car here all day and I don't have a clear idea of where I am to tell a tow truck to come and I don't even know what's around here, if there are mechanic shops or whatever.
I got off the phone with Jeremy while he googled the area for mechanics. Fortunately, I landed just across the street from the shopping area where I was supposed to meet Matthew for lunch. I dash across 6-8 lanes worth of HWY 70 and find the restaurant. And of course Matthew is just his upbeat self and introduced me to Craig and encourages me to check out the menu.
I said, "Before we get started, I'm afraid I'm going to have to impose upon you..." and explained how my radiator hose decided to burst on my way over and my husband has to go work in the afternoon and my phone is dying! I asked if they might be able to give me a ride back to work after lunch.
I must have been visibly frazzled because both Matthew and Craig like, "No problem! We got this!"
OMG, they helped soooooooooooooooooo much. Matthew let me use his phone to call Jeremy, who had found a mechanic just a few minutes away and gave me directions. Matthew and Craig and I discussed what was going on with the car and they were like, "You know what? I bet if we could get some tape, and take it easy, we could skip the tow truck and drive the car to the mechanic."
And that's just what we did. After lunch (and apparently my boss has said good things about me), Matthew and Craig drove me to Target and we got some duct tape and a gallon of water. Then they drove me BACK to my car and Matthew helped tape the rip in the hose and fill the radiator with some water. Then they followed me to the mechanic and Matthew even walked in with me to make sure things were legit. LOL.
And then after ALL THAT, they drove me back to the office.
Seriously, they rocked my world. I need to find out who Matthew's boss is and insist that they give him a raise. For real for real.
So, TEKSystems. I highly recommend them!
The mechanic was able to fix my car within the afternoon and it only (ONLY, lol) cost about $100 to fix. Jeremy was able to pick me up from work to get my car and still make it out to Durham in time, and perhaps a little early.
And I drove the car back to work and then home and it doesn't look like it's having overheating issues. So that's cool.
But THEN, when Matthew and Craig dropped me off at work after lunch, I come back to my code NOT working like it had been for half the morning. And with stupidly vague error messages. Honestly, if the error message said, "Your code don't work. Derp. :P" it wouldn't have been any less helpful.
So finally, I was like, "Screw this," and went to start over. I saved my file and reverted back to the previous version that I knew worked. I was just going to add my code back in a bits and pieces and figure out what was failing that way. And somehow, I'm still not sure how, the code I saved ALSO got reverted. So there was like 2 days worth of work LOST. That on top of car drama. I was seriously about to start crying at work.
But I didn't. Fortunately, since I had mulled through it before, I was able to do about one day's worth that afternoon. And probably did it better this time.
But still. Ugh.
And my knee has been acting up the past couple of days! Like, it doesn't really hurt, but it's really stiff when I get up, like I worked out too hard. Although I have NOT worked out lately. And it's only my right knee, the left one is normal! Maybe I slept on it weird. I guess it's gotten slightly better. But still! Grump grump grump.
But THEN, when Jeremy picked me up to go get my car, he told me that he found "Jesus Freak" on Rock Band and downloaded it for me!!! EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
That definitely made a stupid day better. Hopefully we can figure out how to get "Jesus Freak" to play on Lego Rock Band so I can play without the stupid drum pedal. ALL GAMES SHOULD HAVE THAT OPTION. And only Lego Rock Band does! They didn't even put it on Rock Band 3! Fail.
Think I'm gonna go take a shower and hit the sack.
