Day 2
We didn't have specific plans for these first few days. But I mentioned the aquarium and every agreed to that. I had been there before and enjoyed it and didn't mind enjoying it again. When we got there, we decided to also catch an IMAX movie and buy tickets to the Audubon Zoo.
This way to thar movie!
We saw the movie first. It was a 3D entitled Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure. It was pretty spiffy, informative. But you know what? I was so tired at that point, I wanted so much to just go to sleep, right then and there. The seats were comfy.
Riverwalk is right next to the aquarium. By the time we got out of the movie, it was a bit past lunch. I suggested we head over to the Riverwalk for something to eat. Of course, as we approached it, we learn that the food court is on the other freakin side. I was hesitant to venture there, I kind of wanted Riverwalk to be its own thing cuz there's a bunch of spiffy shops and such to check out. But the roomies insisted and I agreed under the condition that we would not stop and look at anything, just eat and go back. It turned into a game of sorts, reminding each other not to look at anything! They even had to pull me away from a store or two. :P
LOL, the roomies came to Louisiana knowing that this was the land of drive-thru daiquiri stands and were always on the look out for a relevant opportunity. The first thing Lety does when we get to the food court is get a piña colada. LOL She ended up getting fried shrimp, Athena got crawfish bisque, and I got a grilled shrimp
po-boy. And it was nummy.
I can thank Uncle Sam for my appreciation of po-boys. As far as I understood, a po-boy was pretty much a sub. One time when I was visiting, Uncle Sam said he would bring some po-boys by Nana and Pawpaw's for lunch. I thought he would do the logical thing and get me a roast beef po-boy or whatever. He got me a grilled shrimp po-boy. I was sketched out by it. But I didn't want to be rude, so I hesitantly tried. It was flippin good! Who would have thunk it! Perhaps thus began my willingness to try new, if potentially questionable, foods.
After lunch, we hung around La Plaza de Espana outside of Riverwalk for a bit.
After lunch, we trekked back to the
aquarium. It was spiffy as always. I have LOTS of pictures from the aquarium. I'll put a few up here, but there lots of good shots in
my facebook photo album.
Cuz it's pretty. I believe Athena took that one.
Cuz it's hilarious.
Cuz we're silly.
Cuz I learned something ridiculously cute. So, sea anemones are generally harmful to fishies. If a fish touches their tentacles, they get a good poisoning. However, clown fish are immune to sea anemones for some reason. And as far as I know, they are the only ones that are immune. So clown fish will hide in sea anemones to get away from predators. They're friends! Isn't that cute!?
Besides oohing and ahhing at marine life, we also got to pet a baby shark and stingrays! The shark was rougher than you would think. The stingrays were squishier than you would think. And seemed to actually like to be petted. They were cute. Plus, they're happy stingrays! At least from underneath. We didn't pet this one, but he swam over us. Notice the cute little stingray smile. (They must still be celebrating their triumph over the Crocodile Hunter. ... No hate!)
When we were done exploring the museum, we realized that it was too late to do squat at the zoo. Fortunately, the tickets were good for tomorrow as well. Yay! It was still relatively early though, so we headed back to the Riverwalk to do some actual browsing. There was a Cafe du Monde in there, so we stopped and got
beignets.
You can commence drooling. Lety had never had beignets before. She wasn't sure what to expect, as evidenced by the expression on her face at first bite.
She OBVIOUSLY grew to like them though, because next time we stopped for beignets, she got an order to go too. ;)
Athena had had beignets before and she KNEW they were nummy. As evidenced by HER first bite.
LOL.
While at Riverwalk, I bought this really cute hair pin with danglies. Yes, DANGLIES! And I <3 it.
I also bought a pair of sunglasses because I had left mine in my car at home. Freakin sun glasses.
After our second run through the Riverwalk, and after stores started closing, we headed back to Maw and Paw's house. Aunt Barbara was there! And she brought his Popeye's fried chicken. LoL, I guess that is Louisiana-esque. She and Lety started conversing away. They got to the topic of religion and politics and I had to cringe a little. Both of them have their opinions and both of them hold them tight and are willing to tell you all about them. The cringing came from their differing opinions. Oh well, it doesn't matter. Just a little awkward at times.
Eventually, Aunt Barbara bid us goodnight and headed back home. We too, were pretty exhausted. Lety insisted on sleeping on the couch in the living room that night, so as not to disturb Athena when Lety woke up earlier than the rest of us. Freakin Lety, even when she works from 9PM to 7AM, she still will wake up early. I'm not sure if I should envy her or not...
