This time, it's good news! Really good news!
So, the day after I posted my last entry, detailing the laptop drama thus far, I got a phone call from a Lenovo person. Not IBM, Lenovo. Which, as far as I understand, the hardware portion or IBM is now called Lenovo. She introduced herself as the person who was overseeing getting my laptop replaced. REPLACED. MY LAPTOP IS GETTING REPLACED! WOOT! And that's not all. Apparently, they no longer make R52s (my model laptop) so they're going to give me a newer version which was at LEAST as good as my previous laptop. She called in particular to see if Vista was alright with me. Oooo. I asked if it came with the CD for Vista and she said no. Ummmm...
Well, Meredith had given me a CD of software and stuff when I graduated, but I hadn't looked at it too closely. I was thinking that if Vista just isn't working out for me, I could use the CD they give me and replace Vista with XP. But again, I wasn't sure exactly what I had, so I told her I would probably need a machine with XP because I know that all the software and whatnot I need for classes is supported by XP. She understood and said she would look for a machine that came with XP. I went home for lunch that day and looked through my CDs that Meredith gave me. There were a few for Microsoft Office stuff, but the CD for the actual OS was specific to the R52s. (Which is freaking annoying/retarded if you ask me. Because if they just gave us the straight OS CD, we could put it on whatever machine we wanted. But noooo, with the CD MEREDITH gave us, we can only use on the MEREDITH machine. Freakin punks.
ANYWAY. The Lenovo lady called me back later that day and told me that she found a comparable machine that runs XP.
Ladies and gentlemen, the specs:
1GB of memory (the Meredith laptop only has 504MB of RAM. WTF? 504? Not even 512? How did they manage to pull that off? Whatever, maybe some of it is reserved. ANYWAY....)
120 GB of storage (looks like the Meredith comps only have 60 gigs
CDRW/DVDRW (WOOT! The Meredith laptop only had a CDRW/DVDROM!)
A slightly wider screen.
I don't remember what she told me for processor speed, but I don't care too much because I've got twice as much memory and storage and I'll be able to flippin write DVDs. I told her that that machine would do just fine!
She said that it would take 10 days to build. (Awww, they're building it specifically for me. ^_^) Then it would ship from China (ooo) in 2 days (oh snap!) by UPS (Yay! NOT DHL!) So I'm getting a new laptop. Yay yay yay and PRAISE GOD!!!
And I got my mp3 player that I ordered from
woot.com. It's got a gig of space and an FM radio! Woot! I'm gonna wait til I get my new comp to load it up.
Anyway, so that stuff is going good. My car is still running. Holla!
But school pretty much sucks. :(
Even with the extension I got on my program, it's due tomorrow and I'm not even half way done with it. Furthermore, I'm stuck on a segmentation fault and I CANNOT figure out what's causing it. I got Scott (one of the more senior developers at my work) to look over it and he couldn't figure out what was causing it either.
I'm telling myself that we had 2 programs in my other State class, and I didn't finish either of those and I still got an A in the class. But this is graduate school. And I just feel completely inadequate. I know there were extenuating circumstances, like not having a comp, and not knowing the language. And the prof said this first assignment was hard on purpose. But still. I don't think it would be that hard if I could code it. I've got it pretty much figured out how I want to do it, but I keep getting stuck on stupid little things that I cannot figure out. I have to write a "report" to go with the program, and hopefully I get some credit for pretty much knowing how to do the program, even if I can't. But it's stressing me out and it's hard for me to get motivated to do anything when I'm stressed out. My room's a disaster, I still need to have that freakin yard sale, and clean my bathroom, and keep up with my reading for the class. (UM, yeah, I've only actually finished like 2 reading assignments.) I'm really not sure grad school in general is worth it. Scott, that senior developer I was talking about, is just now finishing his undergrad degree. So you obviously don't need an advanced degree if you know the code.
I dunno, I think I'm just stressing out because the project deadline is so close. One way or another, it'll be over by Wednesday. And then I get to start on the next assignment, which I think I have a better grasp on. Semaphores, woot!
I just hope I don't freakin fail the class.
Although, if that were the case, then I wouldn't have to worry about whether I should continue with grad school or not. :P
