The 'demon' that appeared in the arena opposite Buffy was, perhaps, a touch anticlimactic. Rai was tall for a Japanese boy, but still not huge by any sense of the word, and whatever he had in height was more than made up for in his lack of presence. He even had nerdy glasses.

He was completely unarmed, and after a few moments it was obvious that he would be staying that way.

Buffy raised an eyebrow at her unarmed opponent, wondering why he had no weapon, but then again, she had always found the most dangerous people without weaponry, so she couldn't just brush him aside as harmless either.

She pointed her crossbow at him, but did not shoot it. Not yet.

First, she wanted to get what information she could. But if he attacked first, she would be ready.

"Who are you?"

Rai's eyes were drawn to the crossbow first, but unknowing of any limit on his abilities he wasn't very concerned about it. Unless, of course, with his death came the end of his 'contract' (so to speak) with the Diabolo. In which case his invulnerability would be gone. But he had nothing of importance to lose that wasn't already gone.

That didn't necessarily mean he wanted to die yet again. But he certainly didn't want to kill, either. Maybe there was another way...

"...my name is Rai. Kimura Rai."

Buffy stood her ground, a serious expression apparent on her face as she took in the boy's appearance, and heard his name. He was obviously a demon going by his wings. Demons were usually evil, but there were always those few that weren't, but still, whether he was one of those demons or not, she knew she would have to progress.

"I need to win this. I hope you understand that."

"...no time to think of another way," Rai murmured, a slight, sad smile on his face. "There's never enough time."

Louder, he spoke again. "I do understand, but I also hope that you understand that I'm not fond of the idea of dying again."

Buffy was, by all means, in her slayer mode. Truthfully, if she could avoid this, then she would, but it seemed that that was impossible.

"And I would prefer not to die a third time.."

"I don't think you're the one that needs to be worried. I'm no fighter." Rai wasn't about to boast that he was hard to kill, though. He had no idea what his powers would do here. If they'd work at all.

"Let's get this over with, shall we?"

"Sounds like an idea to me."

With that, Buffy shoots the crossbow at Rai.

Rai staggered backward with the impact, caught off guard by the unfamiliar feeling of actual pain, though much less than he'd expect from a crossbow bolt. It seemed his powers were working in at least some capacity. His shirt was torn open from the projectile, the shallow wound it made on his chest (in the precise center of the five scars around his heart from Ren's fingers, even. If he wasn't about to die, Rai would have admired her marksmanship) leaking blood.

So he still belonged to the Diabolo in death. Maybe if he died again, it would finally end.

"...Sorry, but it seems it will take more than that."

Buffy hadn't been completely surprised by his protection. She had seen things like this before, and knew how to deal with them, even if it would be easier with her friends there to help her. Still, his apology had caught her off guard, and she softened only slightly, but it wouldn't have been noticed by anyone who didn't know her. After all, she was good at hiding such things.

"You sound like you want me to kill you."

"Maybe I do. My reasons for it are my own, if you'd respect that. You also seem to have far more to lose than I would." If only because Rai thought he had nothing further to lose.

"My power isn't voluntary. I'm not trying to delay anything. But since you got through it, even slightly...it should be possible to get through it entirely."
