Aerith looked back, the thought of making sure she survived to be with Zack occupying her mind. Zack, I promise I will not fail you, she thought. The cold look that Edward was giving her didn't phase her. Aerith had grown up in the slums, had grown up being teased and given looks that in her opinion far surpassed the one Edward was giving her now.

Edward continued to stare back at Aerith, letting her thoughts flow through him, his hands clenching to make tight fists. After another moment of silence, he sprang, his destination a point behind Aerith with equal distance between them as before. A normal human would just barely be able to see such movement. He was testing her abilities.

At least that was what he told himself. He was actually stalling. He didn't want to kill this girl.

Aerith gasped, whirling around trying to find Edward when she realized he wasn't in front of her anymore. Gripping her staff tightly, she kept the stone look on her face, trying not to show her surprise. He's good, she thought, realizing even now that she probably wouldn't win. But that doesn't mean I won't fight for what is mine, she raced towards him, not even thinking about what she was planning to do, and let out a loud battle cry, swinging her staff at him.

He dodged her attack easily, ducking off to a point that would be at the limit her peripheral vision. Any hope of himself being killed instead were lost. Part of him, the thing that made him anything but human, was triumphant. Ultimately, he would get what he wanted.

He waited where he stood, trying to decide if he should speak or not. Should she know that this wasn't his choice? That he had someone to save? Would it be better for him to just kill her before she had the chance to realize what he was?
