queer ear for the...?

Today, while I was babysitting, I had my Indigo Girls fan station on Pandora while my adorable two-and-a-half year-old charge and I were coloring. Splendid.

Then, “Become You,” became something else, as the brilliant Pandora mixed in a song I’d never heard by a voice that sounded vaguely like (goddess) Amy Ray’s, but more calming. I didn’t know who this woman was. I just knew that I loved the song.

Well, that, and the woman had to be gay.

Here’s the song I heard from across the room, “Burning Bridges”:

Again, back to that “knowing she’s gay” thing. I’ve written about this before, regarding my bewilderment upon discovering that nearly all of my favorite artists were lesbian icons on AfterEllen. Back then, I’d wondered if maybe I liked some of the artists for their nonconforming sexualities. Or, perhaps, I just had some freaky aural radar that made me really, really like queer singers.

My little experience today with “Burning Bridges” is straight-up (harhar) evidence of this. I’m still not sure quite how I knew the singer had to be gay, as I couldn’t hear more than a line of the lyrics- my two-and-a-half year-old buddy was chattering on about Dora the Explorer and what she was doodling. But, I paused my personal Crayola masterpiece for a minute, and checked over to the computer. Pandora told me the song was by “Chris Pureka.” I thought the computer was running slowly, because, hey, isn’t Chris, like, a man’s name? I googled “Chris Pureka” anyway, and one of the first results I got was “Chris Pureka at Lezbopalooza” on YouTube.

SERIOUSLY.

Flannel: CHECK! Knit cap: CHECK!

And she’s cute, too, to boot?

I listened to more of her songs when I got home, and this woman’s awesome. Way to go, queer ear for the queer female songwriters! I mean, it’s a little strange, but it helps in bringing in a new lesb crush or two that are as nice on the eyes as they are on the ears, right?
