rocky day for china/planet earth

Dear Geology,

Hey. What's up. Oh, I know. A huge fucking earthquake in China. The biggest in three decades. Three decades! On the Ring of Fire! Huge fucking earthquake!

And what was I doing last night? Giving the discipline of Geology some tender, loving care for my test today. Being real gneiss, if you will.

And then, today, there's this huge earthquake. Which, to me, ever the cynical student, seems to make the subject feel a little, well... useless.

I don't mean it has to be useless. But, really, what's the point of little ol' me studying my metamoprhic rocks when the Big Guns can't (don't?) predict this gigantic massive hellfire of an earthquake that METAMORPHIZES 10,000 PEOPLE'S LIVES?!?!

Why both studying if we can't actually do a good job of applying it?!

I know that all of this is answered rather simply: we just have to keep advancing! Some day, we won't see 10,000 people get crushed and smashsed and killed within the span of, what, 24 hours. But today, right now, this whole "geology" thing? It's look pretty damn hopeless.

See you in the Humanities buildings, y'all.

Or maybe we should just get stoned,
Beth
