On Politics: Hill(ary)-climbing to the presidency, Barack-in-action

Jan 20, 2007 11:24

I think I was grinning, open-mouthed, ear-to-ear grinning, this morning when I watched Hillary Clinton's video, in which she said that she was "IN IT TO WIN IT"--it, of course, being the 2008 Presidential Elections. She's got her Exploratory Committee up-and-going, and is starting live WebCam conversations about politics for Viewers at Home to engage in.

I think she's awesome. I'm sure many of you think I'm saying this because I have a vagina, and OMIGOD!, so does Ms. Clinton. However, in addition to this fact, I also think she is strong, brilliant, completely prepared, and extremely capable. She is wise, learned, and ready. In other words: she knows her shit.

And I'm not alone in thinking this: here are two of my favorite pieces about Hillary, the first a piece from October written by Anna Quindlen, an extraordinary and brilliant woman herself, and the second a morale-boosting tidbit from Hillary's website (so it's bound to be biased, probably why I like it so much).

I'm pretty positive that Hillary is not the first choice with most other people in the "'08 Is Our First Election Whoohoo!" demographic, because I know a certain Illinois senator who occupies that spot in their hearts. And don't get me wrong, at all: I think Barack Obama is a everything I love about JFK and more, he, too, is breaking barriers, and HUGE ones (should we get started with the Black Man vs. White Woman debate? God help us), but it's just that I don't think he's as primed, as ready, as seasoned or as, to use the catchphrase, experienced as I'd love for him to be. If Hillary weren't running and Barack were, would I vote for him? Sure, probably. But will I rally my ass off for him in '16 if he decides to run then? YOU BETCHA!

My favorite line from Anna Quindlen's column about Hillary was this: The chatter about presidential possibilities for superstar newbie Barack Obama offers liberals a classic opportunity: this time around they could argue the black man versus the white woman and then watch, wounded, as another white guy takes all.

Barack Obama is 45 now. Ms. Clinton is 59, and has many more years of political experience under her belt. In 2016, Barack Obama will be 54, have had much more time in poltics, and will be ready to make his own history, just as I hope for Clinton to make her own in 2008.

Of course, what I would love more than anything is for Ms. Clinton to run for President with Obama as her Vice-Presidential candidate. I also would love to date Seth Cohen and get coffee with Rory Gilmore, but I'm not realistically expecting any of these things to actually happen.

I also just read this about the presidential election: “We need to find a new direction for our country, and finally, we have the man to do it.” This expression just rubbed me the wrong way a little. But then again, I'm a hyper-senstive member of the Sexist Language Police, so excuse my antics.

It's also probably important for me to add a little disclaimer in right about here: I am not completely anchored in my views at all. These are just the thoughts I have now about '08, which although not lightyears from now, is also not tomorrow. I think Barack Obama is a stud, and for the right reasons. He's so personable, friendly, cool, down-to-earth, and, not to be frank, Black!, finally putting a fresh face on the American presidency, as Hill would do, too. I'd happily vote for either, but for now I'm leaning towards the Clinton side. But, what about you guys: Barack? Hillary? Edwards? Gore? Sound off, if you are so inclined. Let the race begin!
