For a moment, I could pretend this meant something more than what it did. As I heard the words ‘I love you’ slip from his lips, I knew they weren’t the truth. How could they be when I know the person he is in love with is in the other room, getting ready for a date with him. I didn’t know if they knew that I had found out about them. I was good at hiding my feelings - I really was. He was just humouring me - my feelings. I had stopped asking where he was going. It save my breath and the tug on my heart, but for a moment longer, as his lips lingered on my lips, I could pretend that it was okay, that he really did love me.
