Barney shook his head as he regarded the cigar. "Nope, I'm having to get used to this whole people from different times and different places thing. I mean, it's completely AWESOME, but is taking some getting used to."

He took a puff of his cigar while he took a peek at his cards. His hand was utter trash, and he knew it. Well, at least he hoped that the kitty would be forgiving to him, or whatever Triad players called the leftover cards.

"Awesome may be pushing it," Kara countered. She held no positive feelings towards this place, interesting people or not. She took another puff of her cigar and perused her cards. Not as good a hand as she'd had last, but workable.

"One shot," she told him to start off the betting.

Barney nodded. "Works for me." He said, tossing 3 cards off towards her, and hoping that he would at least have something that was passable. He didn't want to get too drunk too early, that would take a lot of the fun out of it.

Kara placed Barney's cards on the discard pile and dealt him three more, then discarded two of her own cards and grabbed two replacements. Yeah. That really didn't help her hand, but she kept the reaction off of her face.

"So," she said to him, grinning a bit flirtatiously around her cigar, "what do you do, back on Earth?"

Barney looked at his new cards, and well.. the hand went from crap to at least something he could at least think was passable. Almost like from an Ace high hand to a pair of 7's in real cards. Not that great, but he could at least hope.

"Well! I was the Head of the Search Committee at Goliath National Bank, which.. kind of hard to explain what that really entails but I manage people and I helped search out new business." He said, shying away from the details, and instead he turned it around on her. "And what about you? What was it you did where you came from?"

"Well, that's vague," she said, rearranging the cards in her hand. And sounds boring, she thought to herself, but managed to not say that part aloud. "I'm a pilot," she answered then, with a wider grin. She loved flying, and talking about flying, and...Well, yeah. She loved it, and that fact was pretty obvious. "Viper pilot for the Colonial forces," she added, lest he think she tooled around in mere civilian transports.

"Viper?" Barney said, raising his eyebrow. Okay, so he wasn't exactly sure what she was talking about, but he was sure the hotshot would be willing to explain.
The fact that she was military also explained a lot about her too. He was suddenly worried that she'd just as soon beat the shit out of him than sleep with him. Oh well, it wasn't like Barney to back down from a challenge.

"Yeah, Viper," she said, warming to her topic. She was still getting used to no one here knowing what a Viper was. She'd never experienced having to explain before. "The best godsdamned fightercraft in the galaxy," she said (and if her expression implied that she was the best pilot in the galaxy, well, so be it). "Fastest sub-light fighter in space, too," she added. "Kickass, sexy little ships, they are. Best things to maneuver around the enemy."

Barney could see on her face that she thought that she was as awesome as he was, and maybe she was (at flying this 'viper'), but she wasn't nearly as awesome as he was in general. Still, he had to wonder if the hotel was going to implode from that much awesome being in one small location. And, if things went right, in an even smaller location.

"Really? And what kind of enemy do you have to maneuver around?" He asked, sure that she would regale him with a tale of some evil despot, or giant bugs like in the movie Starship Troopers.

"Cylons," she told him with derision in her voice, when he asked about the enemy. "Humanoid robots. Worlds-destroying little frakkers."

She reached for the bottle on the table - talk of Cylons always had her aching for a drink to dull some of the anger and pain of the attacks - and then she remembered what they were actually here for. She took a quick swig from the bottle before nodding at Barney. "I'll raise it one," she said, bringing her attention - mostly - back to the game at hand.

Barney looked back at his cards, as he'd forgotten what was in his hand, and looked at her again. It was only one more shot, and if he didn't lose, then she'd be one shot drunker. "Okay, I'll call. What do you have?" He said, raising an eyebrow.

"Perfect three on a run," she said as she laid down her cards: the purple six, seven, and eight, and the rest a lot of nothing. It wasn't good, but at least it was something. "What've you got?"

"Two shots to take apparently" Barney said, as he tossed his cards onto the discard pile. He took the bottle and ignored the shot glasses before taking a drink that was probably closer to three shots worth than two. Not that he really cared that much.

The fact that she'd just won a hand on a pretty sad set of cards worked to dispel the last of the irritation she'd felt when the Cylons had been brought up. She grinned and turned her cigar slowly around in her hands. "Where's your beginner's luck now?" she taunted lightly.

Barney scowled ever so slightly at Kara. "Oh, it's coming back! I just decide to give it a rest for a minute, I can't win all of them at the beginning." He said, trying to maintain face. It was hard when he'd lost 2 in a row and had to take 6 shots. Yes, the alcohol was going to start to get to him shortly.
