Elphie finally succeeded in saving Chistery from the big mean door. The monkey flew into her arms and curled up in them, chattering for a moment or two before finally venturing up to her shoulder and glaring at the door.
"He managed to get his tale stuck in the door," she replied, picking up her broom that she'd dropped on the floor.
The monkey glared at Ford and held up it's tail as if to say 'See! It's really long!' Then Chistery pointed to the door and squawked angrily.
"Use your words Chistery," Martha prompted then turned back to Ford. "My guess is he went to see what was inside and then turned back and the door slammed shut before he could get all the way out."
Elphie shrugged. "I didn't see. I was walking that way and he started shrieking."
She could feel herself getting angry, but there was no reason for her to be angry. Damnit Elphie! She closed her eyes and took a breath. "I'm not sure what's in there. But we could go check." She began walking to the door when Chistery got upset again. "Come on Chistery. It's just a door. If you develop a fear of doors because of this, we're going to have some real problems... Ford? You take a look."
Elphie strokes Chistery's back and moves to a different door. When he reacts the same way, she frowns.
"He doesn't think any door is a good idea right now. Chistery," she begins, setting him down and kneeling so she can look him in the eye. "Chistery, we have to be able to go through doors. You like bananas right?" The monkey started nodding and repeating the word banana over and over again.
"Well bananas are in behind one of those doors. And when we go to sleep, we have to go through a door." Chistery didn't look convinced.
The monkey stuck out his tongue at Ford. "Come on Chistery, that's no way to be. Come on..." she let him down. "What if I hold the door open for you? It's not so bad then is it?"
She opened a door and stood in the way so it couldn't close. Chistery looked at her dubiously. "Do I look like the type who will let it shut?" she asked slightly amused. Chistery shook his head finally and walked through into the greenhouse.
It seemed this time they were lucky and there was nothing more dangerous that a few falling leaves. Chistery flew happily to a tree top and picked some nuts, cracking them and tossing the shells down at Elphie and Ford.
"Well, he's not complaining. Which is all I really ask for," Elphie replied, falling aback and slipping her hand into Ford's.
"Well, if any plants try to eat you, I'll fight them off," Elphie said good-naturedly. She'd learned to take what Ford said at face value... that these eating plants probably were true. She'd never seen them.
"What happened?" he asked as he approached.
