"I'm not sure what I believe," said Handy. "He called himself 'the Beast,' he had certain...powers...and he looked like the devil - horns, hundreds of feet tall, all that - but I can't exactly trust what he told me about himself." He tried to grin at Cordelia, to make it a joke, but the truth was that the memory was unsettling and he didn't want to dwell on it.

"You said you met the other Doctor?" he asked, wanting to change the topic.

"Um, just briefly," she said, running her stake gently down the plastic that was covering the stack of unused chairs.

"Right when he arrived. Martha and Captain Jack were there too, so I can't say that he and I really had any sort of detailed conversation. He was too busy putting the braintrust together and trying to get the hell out of here."

Handy moved on to a broken nightstand, having come to the conclusion that the furnace wasn't going to tell him anything particularly interesting about their situation.

"Sounds like him," said Handy, peering into the nightstand's drawer. A thought occurred to him. "Do you know if anyone has seen him around recently?"

He'd been dreading meeting with the Doctor enough that he hadn't thought about how long it had been since Martha had all but said she was going to arrange the meeting and now. It had been the better part of a week - surely the Doctor would have contacted him by now.

"I don't know," Cordelia shrugged. "I haven't been exactly social lately, I guess. Martha would probably know better than I would. They seem...close."

She moved past the stack of chairs and on to a pile of dusty linens in a laundry bag. "Gross," she said, picking at the pile with the stake. Well at least they weren't stained and dirty.

"I haven't seen Martha since I arrived," frowned Handy. "From what I understand this place is full of people, but I haven't seen anywhere near as many around in the common rooms as I would expect, old friends included."

He pulled aside a box to look behind it, and let out an amused snort when he found a disused lawnmower.

"I think most people are still kind of hiding," Cordelia said. "The most people I ever saw in one place was a few days ago at the pool."

She moved on from the laundry bag to an ancient-looking wood stove. Opening the door and finding nothing in it, she snorted. "Well, not counting Holmes' fantastic PTA meeting. That went over so well."

"Holmes...I'm sure someone's mentioned him to me before. What happened?" Handy opened the box that had been in front of the lawnmower and discovered that it was full of garden tools. "Strange. Why would someone build a hotel in the middle of a desert and bring gardening supplies?"

"He's a dick," Cordelia said affably. "Oh, he just arranged for everyone to meet in the bar to figure out why we were all stuck here. It pretty much just ended with excessive drunkenness and some yelling matches." Of course she wasn't going to mention that she had been pretty much solely responsible for the drama at that meeting.

She turned to look at the box of gardening tools. "Hm. That is weird. And the wood stove...why would you need to generate heat in the middle of a never-ending desert?"

She took another step further into the room and discovered a stack on snow shovels. "...Or snow shovels. That's bizarre."

"A dick?" Handy stared at Cordelia as his brain flicked through the possible translations for that word. He wondered if the one that had come first to his mind would have been the same one to occur first to the fully Time Lord version of himself. "Do you mean he's a detective?"

He peered over at the snow shovels. "...maybe this place wasn't always in a desert."

Cordelia laughed. "No. Well, actually yes, I think he might be. I try not to pay any attention to him. I just meant that he's an ass. A jerk. An unpleasant human being."

She looked from the snow shovels to the wood stove to the gardening tools. "Do you mean like the seasons have changed over time? Or do you think the whole hotel physically moves?"

"Oh." Not what he'd been expecting to hear. He tried to remember what he'd heard about Holmes. "Wait, isn't he friends with Doctor Watson?"

"And I don't know." Handy ran a hand through his hair as he looked back and forth between the tools as well. "It could be the hotel was taken from somewhere else. Like us."

"Friends with Watson, yeah. Much more reasonable guy, that Watson," Cordelia said. "I wish he could beat some sense into his friend. I've never understand why people stay in those weird partnerships. You know, Ricky and Lucy, Archie and Edith. Uh, except not married. You know what I mean."

Cordelia frowned. "I don't like the thought of the hotel being moved. That gives us one more degree of separation between the esteemed guests and the big bad."

Handy wasn't really sure that he knew what she meant, but he let it pass. "He must see something in him."

He looked over at Cordelia. "I could be wrong. It could just be that whoever built this place just didn't know what would be needed."

"But that's pretty strange, too," Cordelia said. "Who builds a hotel in the desert and brings snow shovels just in case?"

"Maybe we can find a building permit or blueprints or something down here," she said, moving deeper into the room to a filing cabinet covered in 3 inches of dust. She tried to open the drawers, but they appeared to be rusted shut.

"Maybe they didn't know where they were going to put it," said Handy. "Or maybe they don't know what snow shovels are for."

He saw Cordelia struggling with the filing cabinet and crossed the room to join her, pulling the sonic screwdriver out of the pocket where he'd stashed it once he'd gotten the lights on. "Here, let me help you with that," he said, turning it on and holding it against the latch of the top drawer. For a moment, nothing seemed to happen, but then, to his relief, the latch gave a rusty little click. "Try it now."

"But why would they build a huge hotel and then transport it? That doesn't seem very smart," Cordelia said with a frown.

She stepped aside while the Doctor fiddled with the cabinet. Once the Doctor told her to, she gave the top drawer a small tug. It opened easily.

"Whoa," she exclaimed. "What the hell is that thing?"
