Kaylee had just come back from the pool when she got Jack's message, so she hopped in the shower for a quick rinse off before throwing on her favorite dress and a pair of boots and headed out down the hall her wet hair curling around her shoulders.

She found the cafe without any problems and smiled brightly when she Jack already there. "Nihao Capt'n," she greeted crossing the room and sitting down at the table.

"Hello, Sweetheart," Jack said with a smile. "How are you?" he asked. He leaned forward sympathetically. "Owen told me what happened in the lift. Are you alright?"

Her smile faltered and the light in her eyes dimmed. "The burns on my fingers are better and the bruise on my leg is almost gone," she said with a little shrug. He might not have been asking about her physical well being, but it was certainly the easier question to answer.

He nodded. "Look, Kaylee, I asked you to come talk to me today because... well, Owen doesn't think you'll talk to him and he didn't think it was fair to just... leave you hanging." He took a deep breath. "Owen doesn't believe he's going to get any more of his memories back. He wanted me to let you know that if you want to walk away, he understands and if you want to try again, he's willing... but it will have to be from the start."

Kaylee's eyes dropped down to her hands that were now pressed flat on the table top, the tension visible in her fingers as she absorbed what Jack was telling her. "Someday you're gunna ask me to lunch just because you miss my company," she said dryly still staring at an unidentifiable spot on the table. "I'm lookin' forward to it."

"Kaylee," Jack said, reaching over and covering her hand with his own, "of course I missed your company, but you asked me to keep you informed about what was going on with Owen. I'm trying to do that. I'm sorry that it's not good news."

"No, I'm sorry Jack," Kaylee apologized. "I just ain't sure how I'm supposed to react to that," she confessed. "To any of it, startin' with the fact that he sent you to do his dirty work. I mean how am I supposed to have a relationship with someone who can't even come talk to me about havin' a relationship?"

"I offered Kaylee," Jack replied. "He thought his presence might upset you after the lift and he didn't want to pressure you... he wants to be honest with you about what's going on and what the options are from here."

Jack met her eyes. "You haven't seen him, sweetheart. He's distraught over this. He just wants you to make your own decision about whether you'd like to try again. He's perfectly willing to talk to you. He just didn't want to push you into something you weren't sure about."

Kaylee laced her hands through her still damp locks, her hair creating a barrier between her and the captain as it fell in front of her face while she tried to work through the mess that was her love life in her head.

"I'm all tore up inside," she finally said after several long beats. "I know that ain't none of it was his fault, I know that, but still he hurt me so bad, Jack. If we try again and it don't work out, I don't think my heart could take losin' him twice. Is that selfish of me?" she asked looking up through the curtain of her hair.

"No," he said without hesitating. "That's human of you and you're well within your rights to say no." He reached over and pushed her hair back behind her ear. "You'll always still have your memories of him and of what you had together. I don't think anybody could say they wouldn't understand if you wanted to leave it at that."

"But I don't want to say no either," she said, tears welling in her eyes that she refused to let fall. "I miss him so gorram much."

"Do you want to try just... meeting with him?" Jack asked carefully. "See how it goes?"

"Maybe we can even get through a conversation without any yellin'," she said with a hopeful yet watery smile.

"Maybe!" he said, giving her a warm smile. "I hope it gives you a better idea of what you think would be best, at any rate."

"And no matter what happens, we need to get somethin' figured out between us," she sighed. "It's a big hotel, but we can't keep tryin' to avoid each other forever."

"From what happened the other day, it sounds like it won't even let you," Jack pointed out. "But you're right," he agreed. "The sooner you resolve this, the sooner you can start healing, regardless."
