"Such as?" Ardeth asked. He could imagine the sorts of things that might require such a well-equipped hospital, but for them to be 'caused' by the hotel?

Owen shrugged, "No bloody idea- that's what's worrying me." He gave him a sympathetic glance, if the Hotel was suddenly changing it's attitude to them, then Ardeth hadn't arrived at a very good time, unless of course they were going to need his expertise, in which case, it was a plus for them (but probably still not great for him.)

"But things have happened here that make you believe it is possible," Ardeth supposed.

"Anything's possible. How many places do you know where the rooms move at will and food appears in front of you- and not always when someone brought it to you?"

"I know of at least one person having an accident that may have been caused by the Hotel one way or another, it wouldn't surprise me if there were others. Examples of it's ability to create illusions of various kinds, if you were paranoid, you could say they were examples of it trying out various techniques on us to see which created the maximum impact."

"You think the entire compound may be some sort of laboratory, rather than just this room," Ardeth concluded. He glanced around. "I have not been here long, but from what I have already seen, I would not be surprised if that is the case."

"We all have our own spin on it, but it all comes down the the same thing in the end- we're all lab rats."

A lopsided grin slowly formed on his lips. "Unfortunately, I have a rather bad track record with rats- lets hope this place isn't run by some weird alien rodent relative of theirs. If it is I could be in real trouble.

Ardeth wasn't entirely sure what the doctor meant by that, but since the man was a scientist, he could imagine.

"And you have just discovered this room?" Ardeth said, going back to one of Harper's earlier comments. "Does that happen often? That new rooms appear?"

"I've never come across one before, at least not as far as I know. Think there are places that I've not actually managed to find yet, but that's not quite the same thing."

Owen pursed his lips for a split second. "Suppose I should really go walkabout one of these days and try and track them all down."

"Has nobody ever done that?" Ardeth asked curiously.

"Someone must have done at some point. Thing is, you can't map them- just what's in them. Still I suppose if things are going to get...." He stopped, suddenly not sure how things might get and hoping that the sudden appearance of a medical unit didn't mean what he was dreading it did.

"Suppose it might be an idea to check and see if anyone else arrived around the time you did."

"How would one do that?" Ardeth asked. "Rose mentioned some way of communicating with everyone in the hotel. I thought it must have something to do with the rectangular box on my desk, but I don't know how to use it," he admitted.

Owen nodded, he hadn't thought of using the network, but it was an option, come to think of it, it would probably be an idea if he let everyone know there was a medical unit that way.

"It's pretty easy to use, I'll show you if you like," he offered, there wasn't much to do around here now, although pocketing some useful supplies before he left probably wasn't a bad idea.

"I would appreciate it," Ardeth said with a gracious nod. "May I assume the technology is... contemporary for you?" he guessed.

"Yeah, suppose it is... never really thought of it that way, it's just there and you use it."

"Well, might as well make a move," he said, opening the nearest drawer and taking some of the contents.

"I am certain they did not have such devices in 1933," Ardeth told him. "Even in the West."

"Don't know much about the history of computers, wouldn't have thought so though, unless some boffin was tinkering somewhere. Around the 1980's would have thought they got going. Now it's all mobile phones and chips with everything. Pity you can't talk to Tosh about it- she'd bore you rigid for hours." He smiled, checked the contents of the drugs cupboard, then locked it. Luckily she wasn't here (he wouldn't wish this existence on her for anything.)
