"There's at least one case of two people who knew each other on the outside being here from slightly different universes," nodded Handy, munching the chips. "And I was in a different universe from my original self when I was brought here, anyway."
He thought it over. "Most of the people here are humans from the early twenty-first century, so there aren't too many who would have any reason to know anything about reality bubbles."
"That makes it sound even less than random. Which proves and disproves different theories." Sipping at his beverage he shorthanded a few more notes on the cloth.
"So, you travel from planet to planet helping people, the three of you? I take it you had been to earth before."
"Earth is sort of a second home," admitted Handy. "I've probably spent more time there than on any one other planet. And it's not like I go looking for trouble--but if something's not right, I can't just ignore it, now, can I?"
"Constantly running around, trying to right the wrongs of mad scientists everywhere? Did you say that you were here from twenty twelve but had been to more future times as well? That would mean that you were righting the wrongs of mad scientists every when as well! That would be something Peter would excell at. Actually Peter already does excell at it." This was an inordinantly good grilled cheese sandwich.
"Not just mad scientists, either," Handy felt compelled to point out, though he couldn't suppress a grin at Walter's perceptiveness. Strange in the head or not, he'd have to watch what he said around Dr. Bishop if he didn't want to give away all his secrets. "And you're right, I do also travel in time. I first landed on Earth in the nineteen-sixties, but I've been as far back as when it formed and as far forward as when the sun expands. Farther, really, but not to Earth of course, there is no Earth past that point."
Walter found that a bit sad. "All of time and space laid out before you to see. To learn and experience. That really is quite something. And you are grounded here in this time prison." Finishing his sandwich he licked his fingers and then added. "Perhaps you understand why we scientists go mad. Possibilities versus stagnation. At the very least it makes one understand the need for LSD."
Handy stifled his own sigh, thinking privately that he'd been a bit trapped even before arriving at the hotel. Back then, though, there had at least been the promise of the growing TARDIS in the basement.
"There's an idea," he said. "Give us some LSD, keep us busy that way. Might not be as interesting for them to watch, though."
"You see," Walter said, a twitter with excitement again. "That is why we need a laboratory! It really isn't difficult to make if you have the right equipment. Belly and I used to whip up a batch on the odd Tuesday!"
"Oh-ho yes! Nothing like psycho-pharmacology to liven up the day!" Walter leaned in again, and once again was not any more quiet. "Belly and I actually postulated that we could see into alternate realities when we were on the drug. And then we proved it! I cannot wait to see what happens here."
Handy doubted that they really had been able to see into anything other than their own confused brains, but he had to admit that it was possible. Remotely, vaguely, just almost possible, assuming one or both of them had latent psychic abilities that had happened to benefit from their minds being rearranged a bit.
"Didn't I say? William Bell is the founder of Massive Dynamic. We shared a lab and research projects at Harvard for over twenty years. He's a brilliant man in his own right." But together they had been something else. In fact, know now what The Doctor did with his time, it was startling that he'd never traveled to Massachusetts to stop them.
"No, no. It's confusing to step into someones life in mid-stride." Walter understood, he'd felt that way with Peter quite a bit during the past year. "He formed the company while I was at St Claire's."
"So you joined him after that?" asked Handy, nodding as he fit the new information into the vague timeline he had in his head regarding Walter's life. "What sort of work did you do?"
"No, no. Belly's company was after we had worked together." Walter corrected. "It's like I've known you for ages, I'm sorry. I do need to learn to explain things better. William and I met in the sixty's, we did a large variety of work together on and off until the accident that killed one of my assistants. That was when I went to St. Claire's and Belly started his company."
Walter sat back in his chair getting comfortable with his reminiscing. "We'd do anything. Anything at all. We would think something up, work it out in theory and then test it. Travel through time and realities, genetic mutation, psychic abilities, anything we could think of. We're really quite brilliant you know."
