When videos stop being informative and start being pornographic...

Seven minutes of people dying due to careless driving does not make for a powerful video. It makes for two minutes of powerful video followed by five minutes of needless gore. I had to stop at three minutes in (when it started doing slow-motion takes of babies splattering against the windshield), and honestly I question how much anyone who can actually sit through all seven minutes really took away from it. Things lose power when they're repeated. One well-chosen death scene will drive the point home much more clearly than thirty death scenes, because the average human has a much easier time empathizing with two humans than with with seventy. Seriously, I want to give the creator of the video the benefit of the doubt, but at seven fucking minutes, I can't help but wonder if they weren't just getting off on it.

Also, mom, I know that the real world is not a safe space, but I would like to think that my bedroom is. Please fucking warn for triggers before storming in here at two in the morning and demanding I watch something like that. You've just shot any chance of me sleeping tonight straight to Hell. And you're my mother. You know how I react to things like that, and you made me watch (what would have been if I hadn't nearly ran from my own room) ten minutes of it, without warning, right before bed? Fuck that shit. Brb, curling up in my closet and chanting that it was all staged until I feel better.

life, rant
