entry forty four: the disc does not believe in guns.

It would seem being shot in the head is becoming a bit of a tradition around here - whether it's with a gun or damn alien magic.

At least the first time there was a reason. Ugh.

This is why guns are horrible, horrible inventions - well, not just guns, some of you have things which can kill instantly, whether they're magic or powers, or odd non-human things, I really don't care. It's the fact that someone can kill someone with a single pull of a trigger and not think for a second about it...

The actual shooting aside... Gods, I am glad I don't live on the Roundworld with all you nutjob criminals and your guns. I made crossbows and swords illegal, except by those enforcing the law, and you can say what you like about the rest of what I did in my life; a lot of which I'm not proud of any more, but I'm damn proud of that. Damn proud of it.

I've no doubt I wouldn't have got arrested if someone had given me a gun instead of a sword, but I also have no doubt there'd have been a pile of corpses at my feet. I'd have deserved the arrest then - weapons only enable people to criminal actions.

If I were the wardens, I'd toss them all in a safe box and bring them out only in emergencies. If you're so reliant on a hunk of metal - or, Gods, anything, which can kill instantly, I say you're doing something wrong. It's a very final weapon for so many of you to be quite so casual about carrying.

I equally wouldn't be surprised when some inmate turns your weapons back on you, either - isn't that how everyone else escaped prison? How did everyone else escape prison?

I've reached one conclusion. I would have hated to be arrested by me, but I'd have hated even more to be arrested by one of you 'principled' people, who carries a weapon that can kill. I never threatened death to anyone I arrested, I never let anyone die well, not on purpose - accidents will happen when you're trying to in my charge. A crossbow or sword can cause serious injury, but not immediate death.

I'm curious, now. How many of you are significantly armed, beyond weapons such as a sword or a crossbow, or your own... powers? Would any of you mind explaining to me why? Especially the policemen out there which would routinely carry a weapon of that magnitude. I'm just curious. I think we've got a fair enough interest in knowing who has the ability to kill outright, and instantly, on board.

Doctor? Do you?

concern for the policing establishment, guns make swing uncomfortable, weapons law ftw, play 'spot the lie' with me, concealed weapons make a particular, pissing and moaning, self-righteousness
