IPod Shuffle Challenge Rules:
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards! No editing!
4. Do ten of these, and then post them.
I've chosen Emmett/Toby (Switched At Birth, an ABC Family show) [:
and this is what I do when I should be studying for my summer history final ;-)
and I suppose I should let you know, I'm a huge nerd and I type like really fast so these aren't all super short. *hides*
1. "Pretending" by Glee Cast
He didn't know what happened between them. One moment they were just friends, and god Emmett was the best friend he could ever ask for. He stayed by his side through everything. He was there for him more than his damn parents.
He helped him put gambling to a stop and made him realize that he was meant for so much more. He got Toby to be a better person and led him to have more friends (real friends) then he ever had in his life.
Sometime between then and now, things changed between them. Toby started to notice things he didn't before. He never paid attention before but he now saw the way Emmett looked at him out of the corner of his eye, but he didn't know if that meant what he hoped it did.
The moment Emmett tore down all his walls, he fell heads over heels for him. He was perfect. But, when they talked about love - Emmett would always laugh, signing something along the lines of hearing people always made relationships so complicated.
But Emmett was the one to kiss him that night. So who was the one making things complicated? And why wouldn't he just admit he liked Toby too? Why did he pretend that there was nothing between them? He pretended that the kiss was a joke, but Toby know damn well that it wasn't. He knew he wasn't the only one that felt sparks when their lips met.
2. "Flavor Of The Week" by American Hi-Fi
Toby rolled his eyes when he saw Bay and Emmett together. He loved his sister to death but she had a thing with guys. She never kept them long. She always had flavors of the week and this week it was Emmett. He felt bad for the dude, he deserved better.
He deserved someone like him... Fuck. He shook that thought from his head. He didn't want Emmett. He didn't.
But as he watched the two together and saw Bay growing bored, he called her out. "Bay, don't break his heart. Don't let him be just a flavor of a week." because god maybe he did care for Emmett more than he liked to admit and he just wanted to see him happy and if that was with his sister, he was okay with that.
But he was another flavor of the week. Bay dropped him just like that like all the boys before. She missed out on Emmett doing that. He was special. Toby knew how great he was and Toby found himself holding Emmett tightly later that night, telling him, it'd be okay, there was someone out there that would love him.
Bay smiled seeing that her plan worked, Emmett was in Toby's arms - and she hoped that maybe now Toby would make a move soon.
3. "Watch You Go" by Jordin Sparks
Toby didn't know how they got here. He felt his heart breaking as Emmett left him with no goodbye. He would be back right?
He would. They would make up and they'd be okay like always. But something was very wrong this time. Emmett wasn't there when he woke up. This was different. His side of the bed was empty.
It was always his fault, he knew. Toby would admit that he was stupid, a lot. He always slipped up and made a mistake. He'd go back to gambling again just for a night because Wilke wanted to hang out. Emmett would get mad and say he was going to get addicted again. They would have a silly fight and then they'd be fine again.
But not the this time because oh god he kissed her. Fuck.
He knew he ruined everything with that. Doing that was beyond anything he did before. It just happened, a few drinks in his system, he made the biggest mistake of his life. He would lose the one thing that meant more to him than anything in the world.
They may have made up every time before, but as he watched Emmett pack his bags, he knew that this time, Emmett would be gone for good. He cried when the door slammed
4."Facedown" by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Toby didn't understand why Emmett liked the guy. When Emmett introduced him, he wanted so much to sign fuck off but he didn't. He wouldn't do that to his friend. He seemed so happy to finally find someone to love that was deaf too. Toby wanted him to be happy but at the same time, he hated that he never would give Toby a chance.
He tried to like him, he really did for Emmett. But as he got to know the guy, he realized that he was bad news. Emmett came over one time with a big bruise and signed that it was nothing but looking in his eyes, he knew it was something. Over the last few years, he learned to notice things more, he paid attention to details. He knew for sure Emmett wasn't okay. But right then, he didn't wouldn't allow Toby to help and what could he honestly do?
One late night though, Toby heard a knocking at his door. He yawned as he unlocked his apartment door to see a very broken Emmett. He ran out and hugged him close. He didn't even bother signing to ask if he was okay. He obviously wasn't.
That was it. Toby had enough of this guy hurting Emmett. He was going to put an end to it. He was going to save him.
5. "Grinding" by Girlicious
It was his 19th birthday and Bay thought it'd be cool to take him to a club. He laughed at his sister, saying he wasn't much of a partier. But then Emmett chimmed in signing saying he loved to dance. He watched as his sister simply winked at him.
The thing about it was Toby honest to god was a bad dancer. He didn't know what to do. He could sway his hips a bit maybe, but god he was used to being on stage playing music for people to dance. He didn't dance.
But when Emmett looked up at him with those dang eyes, he found himself nodding to his sister's suggestion.
They ended up at a packed club. Somehow with it being so packed, they lost Bay and Daphne in the club. He frowned, then looked at Emmett. Emmett just shrugged and pointed to the dance floor, signing what Toby knew was saying let's dance.
Toby wanted to tell him no but he just couldn't do that face. He found himself being dragged onto the dance floor. They started out just kidding around dancing and somehow, Toby found himself being grinded on by Emmett.
His breath hitched, a groan on the tip of his tongue. What...what was going on? Emmett moved up and down and Toby just held onto his hips.
6. "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga
He never thought that playing poker at a party would end up with him almost being butt naked. He remembered Daphne saying something about how Emmett was a great poker player, but he shook his head knowing she had to be wrong because he was the best poker player.
Oh god, he was not at all. Every time another card was placed on the table, he found himself losing more clothing while fucking Emmett was fully dressed. This was not fair at all!!
As the game went on, people quit and it was just the two of them in the bedroom alone. Emmett started to lose some FINALLY (or well just his shirt and oh god Toby needed to stop staring).
Emmett gave Toby a wink and oh god he didn't know what was going on. Emmett seemed happy about that. He made a face as he knew Emmett had totally just beat him. There was no clothes left for him to lose. He couldn't read Emmett's poker face and he was okay with that because he knew what Emmett wanted as his prize and it wasn't money. ;)
7. "I Can Do Anything" by 3!OH3
There was one thing that Emmett hated more than anything. He hated how it seemed that hearing people thought he had something wrong with him. They wanted to 'fix him' and he just wanted to punch them (well, most of them).
Like Toby's mom for example? She questioned him all the time when he drove his motorcycle. She said it wasn't safe for him (just because he was deaf). He wanted to point out all the flaws and tell her just how many hearing people wrecked a year but he didn't. He just bit his lip and didn't say something he'd regret.
But most of the time, he didn't take no shit from no one and he signed just how he felt. He was a blunt son of a bitch and that is how somehow he became one of Toby's best friends. Toby loved him because he wasn't fake and he always made him laugh.
And the day, Emmett kissed him? Yeah, Toby was all for Emmett doing anything he wanted to do to him.
8. "Speechless" by The Veronicas
Emmett watched many times through the years Daphne fall in and out of love with people. He never once in those years had anyone catch his eye. Everyone made fun of them when they were younger saying he was in love with Daphne but he wasn't. She was beautiful, totally his type expect for one thing...she wasn't a boy.
Then the whole switched at birth thing happened bringing many new people in his life. One of them being Toby. Toby somehow made him fall head over heels within the first year. It took Emmett by surprise. He honestly didn't know what to do about it. He tried as hard as he could to resist him. But he couldn't. Toby stole his heart before he could say no.
Toby was so like the perfect man for Emmett. He always had Emmett smiling, and touched his hand, and he even learned to sign beautiful things that made Emmett want to cry (but cry happily). Toby left Emmett breathless and that was one thing Emmett wanted him to do for the rest of his life.
9. "So Small" by Carrie Underwood
Toby felt so small when the whole switched at birth thing put him totally on the back burner. He got into gambling many a times and stopped, just as much. He told his parents he was done forever, and they believed him. They believed his lies. But Emmett? Emmett didn't and Emmett was right about him. He was still addicted, maybe more so addicted now that his parents basically ignored him. Toby didn't get how Emmett saw through his lies when he didn't honestly know him that well. They were just in a band!! He stared at him with disbelief. Emmett was totally unbelievable.
Emmett helped him. He took Toby by the hand and brought him to a place to get help. The one problem that was swallowing him whole, Emmett was digging him out of it. He got him to open up when all he wanted to do was to run away. He didn't want to admit to his problems (that were beyond the gambling) but staring at those caring eyes that belonged to Emmett, he did. He told him everything.
He always got lost in his problems and worried about all the wrong things, when he should be simply smile at having a great life. He had a wonderful family and great friends and they loved him. That was all that mattered. Money wasn't anything important. Toby searched forever to find something to make him happy, but in the end it was right in front of him. Everything else was small compared to love. With love, he had everything he ever needed but didn't know in the beginning that it was all he ever wanted.
10. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" by Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke
"How do you sign Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?"
Emmett looked at Toby like he was crazy. What brought this on? He couldn't be serious. He just couldn't.
Toby poked him, "I'm being serious. I want to learn how to sign Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
Emmett shook his head and did as Toby wanted him to do, he signed Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious slowly. He watched as Toby grinned and clapped his hands happily.
The moment Toby tried to copy him, he had to hold in his own laughter. Oh boy.
