Niki sat at the bar, downing another margarita. She was going to need some liquid courage if she was going to go through with this. It wasn't the same as what she did over the internet, not even close. A lot more blackmail and deceit was involved this time around.
God, the internet business... how had Micah known? She knew she shouldn't have felt so surprised. Her boy was a brilliant little man, mature and understanding beyond his years. Nothing escaped him, not the slightest little detail. He put things together before she did oftentimes; she knew that on more than one occasion, he had let her beat him at checkers and Scrabble, or whatever game they picked out for their weekly game night. She swallowed nervously, scanning the bar. If she didn't do this right, there would be no more game nights at all for her and Micah...
Can't think about that right now. I have to focus. She signalled the bartender to serve her another drink and continued to wait for the politician to arrive, praying that the end to her troubles were coming to a close.

When had her life become such a melodrama? Even without the whole 'Omigod, I'm a freaky mutant' factor, things have definitely gotten weird over the past few months. Maybe this is what growing up was all about. Claire wasn't sure she liked it. If growing up meant secretly hating your best friend, nearly getting raped by your crush, and awaiting on pins and needles for the day your biological parents to showed up. She sat on the stairs and watched as her dad straightened his tie and kissed her on the cheek, off for another long day of work. Maybe he was right in wanting her to stay a child forever...
No, life doesn't work that way. She thought, heading to the kitchen to start on the cupcakes for the school bake sale. It took you forwards no matter what, no matter how desperately you wanted things to change. And deep down, Claire knew that change was what she longed for the most. She rarely admitted it, but as much as she longed for normalcy, she also somehow felt stifled where she was. Being the perfect, perky cheerleader, always with a smile on her face and acting like nothing was wrong in the whole entire world... the routine suffocated her when she thought too long about it. It wasn't her. She needed more than the sheltered life she had always lived. She wanted to change. She wanted to grow.
It just scared the crap out of her that growth, in her case, ended up being so weird. Of all the luck...

He was never going back. His place in the world was back home, with his mother, friends and colleages, amidst the bustle and noise and colour of Madras. How he missed the very sight and smell of his homeland, the carts overflowing with jasmine garlands and the smokey traffic that growled from dawn till dusk. He couldn't wait to go back, to lay his father's soul to rest and then immerse himself in the life he sorely desired.
So why couldn't he stop thinking about her?
The city whizzed by him as he sat in the back of the cab. (A rather ironic reversal of fortune, that.) He couldn't stop replaying the moment in his head, when he had impulsively leaned in to peck her on the cheek. But she had caught his lips with hers, and before he knew it they were kissing like in the movies, her fingers brushing against his jaw. He remembered the smell of her, like peppermint and soap and something else, something distinctively... American. And he was never going to see her again.
The taxi stopped in front of the depatures gate and he hopped out, pulling his suitcase out of the trunk. Now was not the time to think about the past. He would go back home and rebuild the life he had left when he had decided to chase his father's dream.
But he would always remember that kiss.

Dammit. She had lost her earpiece in the struggle with the security guard and now she was flying blind.
