Went to see the "Desolation of Smaug" Saturday with Mom - I spoilerized myself shamelessly beforehand, so it was about what I expected
Waaaay too many orcs, not nearly enough hobbit, but the bits of hobbit were a delight. One fancy Legolas-leaping-improbably-about per movie is quite sufficient, thank you very much. Remember that part from the book where the dwarves fired up a giant forge and then doused the dragon in melted gold? Hm, I don't mind a bit of tweaking the story but dear sweet Primus! Although the forge and the golden dragon were quite nifty, but still. My tolerance for wild and wacky narrow escapades is about five minutes, tops, and it just goes on and on and on and on @_@ Mom and I both agreed - it will be much nicer on video when we can watch the good parts version *nodnod* I quite liked Tauriel, though, and the little flirty bits with Kili managed to charm me rather than trigger eyerolling. Rock on, short dudes! :D
Lovely spiders! Not a movie for the arachnophobic, which happily I am quite the opposite, so I was able to enjoy them - they really were very nicely done.
Smaug was marvelous.
Beorn's little bit I thought was one of the best parts of the movie, sad that it was so short, pretty pretty horsies!
HOWEVER. Apparently the barns of Middle Earth are inhabited by white lab mice? *headdesk* Wild mice can be problematic to keep and handle, I understand, but there are all sorts of varieties of domesticated mice that are black or brown that can be very sweet and tame and would have worked just fine. Maybe they were a special moonlit elvish mouse species? Blessed by Galadriel herself to protect the from predators due to their complete lack of natural camouflage? *contemplates writing a "mousies of Middle Earth" fanfic* There's no help for it, they're going to have to hire me to thoroughly screen the next movie for glaring natural history mistakes (and maybe chop most of those endless orcy hijinks scenes while I'm at it).
