[For Shadow]

May 23, 2008 16:06

Ainsley normally had issues with saying too much and not stopping soon enough and going on and on and on and now, to her horrible surprise, it seemed like not only was she talking entirely too much, but she was also telling the truth. And while that wasn't so bad around people who already knew her political and personal leanings, there was a teensy ( Read more... )

He knocked on her door and waited outside, even though he knew the roommate question wasn't an issue anymore. It didn't hurt being polite and giving her a moment to collect herself before he just barged in.

It had been a long, quiet week, which he figured was about what he needed. Time to get his head around things and to let the cuts on his hand start healing. Needed a bit more time, maybe, before he took the bandages off his palm, but things were knitting themselves back together.

"Ainsley? It's Shadow."

She didn't have a cyanide capsule with her. Damn it. Ainsley forced herself to take a deep breath and opened the door widely for him, standing back to give him room to enter. "Shadow, hi," she greeted warmly. "I was hoping to see you." Which was nice and easy and truthful because she wanted to see him all the time. "How are you feeling?"

Giving her a small smile, he stepped inside this place of hers, this neat little home that he had helped build for her. "I'm okay. Glad to see you." Turning to her, he spread his hands and shrugged. "I think it's another one of those island weekends. Compulsive honesty again. For me, at least."

There were worse things that could happen, most definitely, but this wasn't exactly the uneventful weekend he'd been hoping for.

Ainsley leaned up to kiss his cheek in greeting, not exactly wanting to sidestep over all the little tendernesses, just because the Island was having a good time at their expense. "Me too, actually," she admitted, wrinkling her nose. "One hundred percent truth and when combined with my propensity to talk and talk and talk, this could really be a danger for anyone who knows me, not to mention that I so intensely do not wish to say anything that could potentially ruin things as they are and my babbling when combined with the truth may do just that," she said, wringing her hands as she finished.

He smiled at the kiss, and before he could help himself his smile grew as she just kept on talking.

"It's weird," he agreed, as though that summed up her whole speech. "But it couldn't really be worse than Karen asking Rollie what sex is, right? At least we're caught in this together" His bandaged hand squeezed hers for a moment

Ainsley gave a sharp laugh intermixed with an 'oh my god' as she took his hand lightly and rubbed small circles on his bandaged palm with her thumb. "I am so glad that she hasn't asked that of me in my presence because while I'm sure I could use a great deal of scientific terms to describe it, I'd then have to die of mortification."

"Yeah, we're both acting like idiots and telling the truth together," she noted, sounding less than pleased. "It's like couples time!"

"You do very well with her, despite your occasional mortification," he said fondly, remembering that time when Ainsley's blush was clear in the early morning light. "She loves you very much too."

Shadow laughed as he threaded his fingers through hers. "We can keep quiet, if you'd rather. Take a walk, maybe?"

"I adore her too," Ainsley agreed, the words coming out of her mouth before she even had time to think about them. But really, what was the use of worrying? "I love her. She's adorable and sweet and I do." She kept a very light grasp on his hand, but she eased herself closer. "We can walk and we can talk, if you'd like. I don't mind you knowing my truths."

"I would like to know them," Shadow agreed as he stepped up close and kissed her once on the mouth. Then he looked down at her fondly. "We could go back and forth, asking questions. Fair's fair, that way. Find out my truths too."

"That sounds absolutely terrifying," she admitted, but couldn't help leaning up into his kiss and leaning against him before standing on her own two feet. "But also very enticing, really. I don't know how I'm supposed to say no." She gently nodded to the door. "I guess someone should start? And it'll be me," she instantly decided. "Are you honestly okay after what happened the other day with the eye?"

He opened the door for her to give himself a moment, but seemed to start talking right away despite that. Not just forced honesty but immediate too.

"Not really. It's still all too big and new to really wrap my head around. And some of the things Eostre said scare me, even though I should have worked it out for myself. But I..." Shadow managed a pause for himself and looked at her as he fell into step with her. "I know that I will be honestly okay. So that's enough for right now."

"Good, I'm glad it won't be cause for perpetual damage," Ainsley replied, stepping past the door and into step with him as they walked. "I'd hate to think that the past haunts us like that and ruins our present, I really do."

She took a deep breath to brace herself for her question in turn.

"No, it won't. Just makes me re-evaluate things. Lot of things make a lot more sense." Lying in bed, sometimes he couldn't stop thinking about it. Going over events, trying to put all the pieces together again. But that was in the past now like she said, wasn't it?

"Why did you think your talking and truth-telling would ruin things?"

Ainsley felt herself freeze up with panic and she gaped at him for a long moment before she swallowed and the words were tempted to burst forward. "Because I want things that are too forward for what you and I have right now and those things aren't going to ever go away and I thought by now. Well, I though by now, I'd have been started down those paths."

He frowned slightly in confusion but reached down to squeeze her hand reassuringly. "What do-" Then he caught himself and, smiling slightly, shook his head. "It's your turn."

Ainsley took a deep breath and nodded, glad for the momentary reprieve, seeing as she wanted to ease into it, if they were going to get into it. "Doesn't doing what you are with Karen scare you? I mean, to just jump into being a father to someone the way you did, aren't you terrified of something going awry? I know I am, even in my limited capacity of watching her."
