By the time that I get back to the firm, I’ve turned this little mystery over in my head from every damn angle that I can dream up. Wesley didn’t talk… and alright, it took Cordelia’s common sense to remind me of that, but I’d like to think that some part of me knew it all along. (Even if ‘integrity’ wasn’t his middle name, he dislikes Lilah Morgan enough that I think he wouldn’t give her info on the side simply out of spite.) The boy’s also got enough sense not to mention the more delicate details of a case like this to his brother before we’re closer to a real answer.
That leaves… well, me. So unless I’ve been walking and talking in my sleep, it means that somebody’s been in my office when they shouldn’t have been. And that doesn’t sit well with me. No, not at all.
“Eve!” Swinging open the door that I usually take so much pride in, with its little frosted glass window and ‘Mr. Lindsey McDoanld, Esq.’ written all classy in the center, I look around the place for Eve. How is it that she’s never here when I need her, and hanging over my shoulder like a bad spirit when I don’t? “Eve!” Never mind the fact that I’d be lost without her. That little gal is worth double her weight in gold when it comes to holding this place together… but there’s something about her, I swear. Something hiding behind her sweet-as-sugar smile that makes Lilah Morgan look about as pure as the driven snow. Sometimes I wonder…
“There you are. About time,” I mutter, when she finally turns up. Embarrassingly, all that shouting took enough out of me with my cold that I actually have to sit down, trying to make it look like that was my intent all along. “We’ve got trouble,” I tell her, fumbling for my handkerchief to blow my nose. “The money-losing kind of trouble.”
