Good-bye to the Fishers and the Chenowiths. I'll miss most of you - well, not Nate (or even Late Nate), because he was a jerk. Spoilers for the series finale below:
I really enjoyed the series finale - it's been a long time since a show has managed to choke me up a bit. I'm delighted about the happy ending for David and Keith and their boys. Michael C. Hall has been consistently amazing through 5 seasons, and seriously deserves to find academy award winning movie work.
I'm also glad that Brenda had a happy ending as well - throughout the series, I've been frustrated by Brenda, but I've always had a soft spot for her. In the end, she was too good for Nate. But I think she deserved some happiness, and I think caring for her children (I'm including Maya in that category) will provide her with peace.
I meant what I said about Nate a few entries ago - it struck me during the final dinner scene that his death was probably the best thing that could have happened to everyone at the table. He was just such a vortex of self-absorption that while he was around no one could break free. But now that he was gone, Brenda could actually EXPERIENCE having family in the form of David and Keith, and could love Maya without feeling as though she was just on loan from Nate.
I've never liked Ruth (although I know Frances Conroy is beloved by many), so I didn't really care about her storyline. Ditto for Rico. I'm ambivalent about Claire - in the first few seasons, she was my favorite. But in the last couple she's rivalled Nate on the "Shut UP!" meter, so much so that I ended up being rather detached from her story as well. But I'm as happy as I can be for David, Keith and Brenda, so all in all it was a very satisfying way to say farewell to this show, even if it was sad.
Oh, and Billy's latest shirt? "What Would Jesus Bomb"? Too funny.
