As a full-time freelance writer, I don't get out of the house very much. Which is one of the reasons why I look forward to Wednesday and Thursday nights.
A few months ago, I decided to join the local Rotary and Lions clubs here in Boothbay Harbor, and let me tell you, I am glad that I did. Yes, service organizations like this aren't as much in style as they used to be, and I'm probably one of the groups' youngest members (by a decade or two in the case of the Lions), but I am enjoying the hell out of belonging to these two clubs.
For one thing, they are both full of interesting people I probably would not otherwise get a chance to meet, not just from the community, but from all over the world. As a popular vacation spot, Boothbay Harbor attracts at least a half-dozen visiting Rotarians and Lions every week, and they come by the clubhouses to socialize, make contacts and share stories.
For another, these clubs are doing great work. The amount of money they raise and time that they give back to the community is staggering and inspiring.
Seriously, I'm sorry I didn't get involved with groups like this years ago.
What does this have to do with freelance writing? Umm... not much. At least, not directly. But I think that getting involved helps to make me a better writer. These clubs let me see new things, meet new kinds of people, and go to new places. They are expanding my world, and making me a better and stronger person.
Plus they get me away from the computer two nights a week.
