So, I was thinking recently about exactly how much noise there is in our world. I mean even silence has a noise. Each room whenever it's quiet makes a different sound. I mean right now I can hear the fan, my laptop, the people in the room next to me, South Park, me typing. Tons of stuff. This made me think what things wouldn't be the same without the noise they make? For example, my high school art teacher had a paper cutter that made the loudest more horrible rusty squeak whenever you used it. And now, thinking back on it, I don't think I would've felt the thing was doing what it was supposed to if one day it just stopped squeaking. It wouldn't be as satisfying chopping through that paper if it didn't scream at me when I did. What else wouldn't be the same if it didn't make a noise? If you didn't hear the keys clicking on your keyboard when you typed would you check to see what was wrong? What about if you had your window open and there was no sound what-so-ever outside? What about a silent vacuum? Wouldn't that just be weird if they made an entirely silent vacuum? You wouldn't know if the thing was on until you stuck your finger in it or got your hair caught or something catastrophic like that. You'd start banging it on the floor screaming, "MAKE THE NOISE! I LIVE FOR THE NOISE!!!" Or how about that noise a vacuum makes when it goes over something... different. And you go, "Was that a piece of grit? Was it some jewels? Or perhaps the lost treasure of Milton Sharp?" Then you tear the bag open. Must know must know! Ah it's a piece of grit! What if vacuums made a different noise when you went over that grit? Like it squeaked like a rubber duck or something. Then you'd just stare at it and go "What the fuck was that?" It's interesting how we react to different noises. Some of them we ignore while others drive us crazy when they're just as loud. Some people can sleep with background noise while others can't (I personally can as long as it's consistent. I don't do well with talking or beeping but buzzing is fine). Why is that? No two people hear a sound the same which is kind of odd when you think about it.
