Dear Ms Chien:

I am happy to tell you that the graduate admissions committee of the Department of English at the University of Waterloo has recommended that you be admitted to the Master of Arts program starting in the fall of 2007. This acceptance is conditional upon the approval by the Dean of Graduate Studies, and the satisfaction of the minimum requirements for admission (cumulative average of at least B+ or 78% in English and B overall; possession of an Honours BA or its equivalent).

We are also able to offer you guaranteed financial support of about $12,000 for the year. This support consists of a combination of scholarships and Teaching Assistantships.

This support is available only to full-time students, and the scholarship requires that your overall average be 80%. While we realize that the costs of attending graduate school may be greater than we can offer you, we hope that this support will help. Should you receive an external award (SSHRC or OGS), you will receive the UW President's Scholarship, valued at $10,000.

Within a few weeks you should receive a “Letter of Provisional Approval” from the University Graduate Office. Once all the conditions outlined there are met, you will receive a “Permit to Register,” which is the official acceptance into graduate studies here at Waterloo.

I encourage you to look again at the department’s website at www.english.uwaterloo.ca and refresh your memory of the opportunities we offer, including our graduate course offerings for 2007-08. The faculty research interest pages will give you an idea of the range and quality of our expertise, and the SAGE website (through the contacts page) will give you more information about graduate student activity in the English department here at Waterloo.

We hope to hear from you within two weeks of the date of this letter. A phone call or an email indicating your intentions would be welcome any time before then. And if you have any questions, or would like to schedule a visit or an interview, please let me know. I can be reached almost any time by email at vlamont@uwaterloo.ca, or by phone at 519-888-4567 x 36873. You should also feel free to contact by email any of the faculty whose profiles and work interests you. I look forward to hearing from you, and hope to be able to welcome you to the program in September.

Sincerely yours,

Victoria Lamont, PhD
