Name: Julienne
Age: sixteen
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
To change the world drastically, I would find some way to prevent the utter desecration of language in every country by insisting on a high literacy level and education for all people, regardless of everything else. This in turn would give people a thirst for something better, whatever it may be, encouraging invention and reinvention, bettering all countries, especially those with very little. I firmly believe that catching the fish for people is only helpful once, but teaching them how to fish is helpful everyday for the rest of their life.
Who is your favorite Hogwarts teacher?
McGoogles, for sure. She’s quite witty, learned, and dignified. I think she needs more text-time, as her character is very intriguing. Failing that, Snape makes the second top of my list. His character is intricate and carefully shaped. Rowling has put care into every description of him for exposition and developmental purposes. That, or I’m giving her way too much credit. What can I say? I value a good character.
Who is your favorite character in Harry Potter?
Sirius Black *cough* He’s not much of a character (don’t kill me, but it is true), but as a person, Black is exemplary. His backstory is very interesting, and I love every detail about the Marauders Era that I can get. Placing him in Gryffindor was the Hat’s best work. Brave, loyal, and courageous, Black’s memory could be a brilliant saving grace for Potter if his resolve is ever tested. Also, he’s just so cool! (Forgive me as I dissolve into fangirlly screams).
Who is your least favorite character in Harry Potter?
Up until book five, I still held a semi-respect for Malfoy, but after his static, flat, and overall empty actions in OotP, I found him rather dull and underdeveloped. He could have been and used to be a brilliant foil for Potter, and I believe the Rowling messed up the juxtaposition in OotP. True, he showed his true colours as everything Potter is not, but in doing so, he lost the vindictiveness and became merely spiteful. He was still foiling Potter, but less dramatically.
What makes a person respectable?
Respectability… That’s a toughie (which, by the way, is a very strange word). Anyways, I’d say knowledge and learning has nothing to do with respectability. It’s all about relationships with other people, really. Someone who relates perfectly to those around him, cares about them, and is rather graceful. Someone with flair, flooring charisma, dashing, if not in looks in character. Goodness, a respectable person would need to be valiant, courageous, and loyal. The charm and flair are optional but make for a brilliant sight. In short, someone who instills awe through their courage, honesty, vigour, and loyalty, both to themselves and their compadres. Someone who stands up for their conscience. Someone with backbone.
What is your take on religion?
Guilty. I’m a Roman Catholic, so my beliefs are all written down in the Catechism, but I’ve got a lot of universalist in me. Jesus said, “What you hold true on Earth, I will hold true in Heaven,” which I take to mean that if you follow the Church of Don’t Be an Asshole, you’ll get some kind of heavenly reward. If you believe in karma and reincarnation, I believe you get it. I believe that misinformed radicalists do get some kind of reeducation, like purgatory without the flames. Really, it’s a choice, so whatever someone else wants to believe, hey, they’re welcome to it, so long as they aren’t trying to insult or shake my beliefs. I certainly don’t try to enforce Catholicism on my friends, as it’s always more fun to discuss different beliefs. Truth be told, I don’t really care about religion. God’s got my back even when I don’t have His, so I try not to worry. The whole eternal forgiveness thing works on me like no other; I have an awful conscience where even little things nag me.
What do you think about house elves?
Terribly amusing. Hell, if they want to stay in their indentured servitude (politically correct, of course), they’re welcome to it. I think they are completely nuts to be so subservient, and I find it annoying, but I’d never insult one by telling it to get a life. I won’t and don’t condone, however, taking advantage of them the way Malfoy did in CoS.
What do you look for in a friend?
Charisma, courage, intelligence, and extravagance, if not in material things, in thought. Someone with whom I can go out for a wild night on the town, dashing through stores, playing Johnny-on-the-spot guitar riffs in front of Starbucks, scream about fandoms with, and generally be crazy-go-nuts. I also want the person to have a Calm mode for serious moments, and I hope that I’m everything to my friends that they are to me.
Would you rather have friends and family or money and success?
I hate my family. Some of them are my closest friends, but I consider them friends. My friends are my closest confidants, and while I don’t tell them everything, they somehow know most things. Without my friends, I’d probably be lost because I rely on them for everything from a hello in the morning to a hug when I’m scared. They’re everything my family isn’t, so I love them. Money and success, which I would do a lot of things for, pale in comparison to what friends can be. As Queen once said, “Take care of those you call your own, and keep good company.” What’s a ton of money without someone to lavish it on?
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Gosh, I’d try to be more courageous. As a kid, I tried to be my star signs (Dragon and Leo) in every respect, but lately, I’ve kinda lost sight of it. I used to be a daredevil, trying everything I could, but recently I’ve mellowed out. I’m more likely to go with the flow than demand a change. Well… actually, I’ll go with it, but I’ll mutter and plot and be disgruntled. I’d like to be the kind who has to get carted off kicking and screaming. I’d like some intensity, please.
What do you feel is your best quality?
Drama queen. You haven’t met a real piece of work until you’ve met me. If there’s even a small problem, you’ll know about it. For my one act, when I hadn’t memorized my lines by the time I should have, I spent my last few minutes before rehearsal pitching a fit about the fact that I had ten minutes to learn eight pages of lines, half of which were mine. Yeah, not such a good quality to value, but it makes for an interesting day. I can’t go to bed until I’ve caused at least one scene.
What are your hobbies?
I’m a techie, so despite the actorly paragraph above, I spend all my time behind the scenes, building sets and the like. I’m usually in charge of lights, but I’m branching out. I’m also involved in various clubs with my friends, one of my favourites of which is a refugee fund. It’s a great chance to be innovative, as we have to find ways to get our beatnik classmates to donate to charity. Failing those, I read, write, hang out with my friends, and troll the internet. Occasionally, I go on fangirlly stints for several months at a time, the most notable of which was a Matrix obsession.
Do you want to have children?
You know what? Maybe. I talk about my future children like they’re a given, and I’d love to be a mum, to be able to tout my children proudly, but I have this phobia of small animals, children included. I can’t baby-sit because they will break. I will walk in the kitchen to find a broken child sitting on the floor. Children and I won’t mix. I’d warp their minds and be an awful mother, so for their sake, no kids for me. Besides, how does a theatre nerd hope to provide for their young?
Have or would you give time and money to a charity?
Since we’re required to for school, I have and do, but outside of school, it’s a fun experience. It’s a challenge. Some people get a helping others good feeling vibe from it, but I get this exhilarating and triumphant feeling when a project is done, mostly because I’ve done something that will make a difference for someone else, focusing more on the I’ve done part. It’s selfish, yes, but it’s much better than the people who do it to feel good. I just do it to get something done.
If your friend was attacked (by a person, animal, or (in the magic world) beast), what would you do?
Scream. Scream and find a big stick to beat the attacker away. If I had a wand, I’d be doing something about it, you bet I would. If anyone tries to hurt someone I care about, I’ll give them one. If I wasn’t there to save them, I’d try to clean up the mess, make them feel better, nurse them back to health, whatever, but I won’t seek revenge. Ten-fold rule. I won’t, however, help said person if they’re ever in trouble.
What is the one thing you would most like to accomplish?
Easy. Finish at least one of the damnable stories I’ve started eight different ways. Failing that, I’d like to have a grand adventure.
Who is your role model?
Er, I never really had one. I saw my star signs and devoted myself to being their exact definition. Oh, and for a time before my confirmation, I had a stint of wanting to be Jean d’Arc. Or St. Michael. So my role models were a lion, a dragon, and two saints. Pretty pitiful.
What trait most annoys you about other people?
IGNORANCE! Christ on a crutch! It’s not that hard, people. I’m stuck in a regulars history class, and it’s not stupidity (or at least I hope not), it’s just plain ignorance. If they’d listened the first eighty-five thousand times, they’d get it by now. We’ve had US History upwards of four times now, and people still don’t know what Thomas Jefferson’s last name is. No, I’m serious. Dead serious. And another girl asked what the blue parts on a map were.
What do you want to do for a living?
Hi, I’m Julienne, and I’m your Lighting Designer and Master Electrician. I’ll need to speak to the following actors to discuss your blocking around the TV and light switches…
Would you ever use an Unforgivable Curse for any reason?
Uh, yeah! If there’s a reason, of course. I mean, if it’s a good enough reason, then yes, but all other options would have to be exhausted. There are many ways to make people tell you things, veritaserum the least of these. Now, if I was being rash and in a blind rage, I might not think clearly enough to weigh the consequences. If I had a gun and I needed to use it, I would. Why not a wand?
What house do you think DOESN'T fit you? (This question is optional for those who feel they just DO NOT fit in a house. Please explain WHY.)
What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
Top five, as in, most predominant? First, I’m cooler than you. That would be pride. I like my ego the size of an elephant, thank you very much. Second, I consider myself discerning. I will solve your measly puzzle, you Eengleesh connnigit! Third, I’m ace at the lightboard. You want a custom light job, you call me. (Techie Pride). Fourth, I’m a good writer, an ability I enjoy to no end. Attending summer writing camps is a barrel o’ monkeys for me. It’s great to meet other people and get critiqued. Fifth, on that note, I take criticism, if not well, with some form of humility. I take everything with a grain of salt, but sound advice is sound advice is sound advice. I may hate being wrong, but if someone else is right, then I will acknowledge that fact, however grudgingly.
