Heechul looked out of his window to the vast city, like an ocean of cement and dull lights. The ashen sky seemed like glass, so fragile and easily broken. The rain racing towards the ground reminded him of that day years ago after training. They ran back to their shared apartment with the rain kissing their exposed skin as the underground tunnels echoed their laughs.
Clouds tumbled towards the east, abandoning him too. Tears spilled over as he closed his eyes. Heechul tried to deny his desire to see that scarlet string again. But it came loose long ago, it’s magic falling apart.
A long crackling of thunder shouted from the distance as he felt his hard shake in its wake. There was no life outside and the world seemed desolate. Everything but Heechul had blown away as if nothing. He had wanted to say so many things but never had the chance. Heechul chuckled at the though ‘maybe in my next life?’
It was so absurd now. If anyone else was there they would have questioned their princess’ tears and laughter. Heechul sighed as he remembered the goodbye they shared.
“Farewell? Ah…we can’t meet again, can we?” He asked with a shaking voice.
Their hands, once held so firmly in each others, tied together with that scarlet string. He separated their slim fingers. “Well, I’ll still message you…you have to reply” Heechul muttered sternly. A small “yes” was the only reply. Heechul just had to accept the deceit of that gentle lie.
Heechul touched the cold window pane. The icy blast that nipped his fingers forced him to remove his hand and instead opted to wipe at his eyes. With his head tilted back to deny the tears from falling to the ground. He muttered his name “Hankyung” three times, chanting, if it was a fairytale he would have been back now right? That image of his smile remained forever on Heechul’s mind. That nerdy guy who could speak better Korean than he let on, that cool guy that travelled far from home just to wear a mask, that guy that Heechul relied on.
Heechul stood from his place at the windowsill. Padding over to his bed, slept in and messy. He shuddered at the chill of his once abandoned mattress. He pressed himself further into the comfort of sleep, pushing everything into the recesses of his mind.
A weight on the end of his bed pulled him to consciousness. Reaching up to rub his sleep blurred eyes, he felt the softness and the comfort envelope him as he looked at that scarlet string. His eyes traced its deep colour along his plain bed to the shape of a black tank top coating defined shoulders and perfectly styled hair. Heechul Leaped forward, all discretion lost as he hugged Hankyung around the waist crying into his shoulder. The younger man smiled soft, running his hand through Heechul’s tousled locks. “You’re not leaving again right? You’re staying here aren’t you?” Heechul muttered playing with Hankyung’s fingers. “No, I’m staying this time, I can’t leave again” He replied with a silky voice. Heechul sat up straight and looked into his chocolate orbs, “pinky promise?” He laughed softly at Heechul, raising his hand. The two men smiled softly as their fingers entwined and that scarlet string twisted around in a gentle pattern.
