twilight of the ascendancies

At first I was attracted to the fact that this church was being so degraded by the presence of the crane. It seemed to be a perfect emblem of the ascendancy of materialism over religious values, the crane outreaching the peak of the church. I was going to title it "clash of the ascendancies" but desided to change it. The twilight fits better - religion is something that modernism was meant to do away with and failed almost as completely as it failed to do away with poverty or disease. Really the two ascendencies seem degraded to me, both as equally futile, wrestling each other in the dirt, each in their various forms ascending towards its own dubious ideal.
