Slugs can really hustle when they want to.
I have a big dish outside that I fill with water for the birdies. They often come to have a drink and take a bath. It's sitting on some mulch and after a few days the bottom becomes home to a few slugs. When I change the water, I first turn it over to let it dry out and to get rid of the visitors. I look at the slugs, get creeped out, turn away, and when I look back, they're gone.
I don't know who they're trying to fool with this whole, "Ooo I'm a slug, I'm so slow," shtick. I'm not buying it.
