Magic: The Gathering Draft - questionaire thing

What is a booster draft?
It is a limited event where you buy three booster packs, LEAVE THEM UNOPENED, and then, we draft the cards (see Style). Once all cards are drafted, you request Basic lands from the organizers (Sean and I), and create a 40 card minimum deck - you can have any amount of any card, as long as you DRAFTED it. Then, you play a match with a randomly paired player. You play best out of three games, and in between each game you may sideboard. In limited, that means you can add/replace cards you didn't put in your deck (your sideboard) with cards in your deck. However, at the start of the next match, the deck must be back in its original state.
Just ask me if that's confusing, and I'll do my best to clear it up.

Why?
Sealed drafts are, in my opinion, the most fun way to experience magic. While competitive, this will be a match between friends. You get to pick cards from your boosters, so it's not only the most balanced way to experience magic (where skill is the ONLY factor - okay, maybe a little luck), but you it's also the best way to purchase magic - you get to pick your cards, which means you end up with a much greater amount of good cards versus crap cards that are useless to your or your playstyle.

When?
We're looking at having it this Sunday, November 6th, starting at maybe noon.

Where?
This is yet to be decided. If we do it at someone's house, we must fully plan ahead of time. If we do it at Ancient Wonders or something, assuming they don't mind, then we can decide prizes relative to who comes, who pays in for prizes, and what the winner wants. I'm more in favor of doing it at AW, by the way.

Times?
Start time means that's when we sit down and open the first pack(s). Drafting and deck construction will take either a half hour or an hour, depending on what style we do - I'll get to that later. Each match will then take 50 minutes, with about 10 minutes of break in between, depending on peoples' wants/needs. That means, if we're doing single elimination, normal draft (fastest way), we'll be done at about 4:30 pm.

Styles?
This is where I need your input. Do we want Rochester or normal style draft? A Rochester draft is where one person opens one of their boosters, lays out all the cards in the center, and picks one, and then it goes clockwise until they've all been picked. Then, the next person to the first (clockwise) lays out one of their boosters, etc. until all 24 boosters have been set out. This takes QUITE a bit longer than normal drafting, but it is a bit nicer for newer players. The other kind of draft is just a normal draft, where the 8 people cit in a circle, or around a table, or whatever, open up one pack, pick a card, pass the rest to the left, and continue until all cards are picked, then open second pack, pass right, then open third, pass left. It's quite a bit faster.

Double vs Single Elimination
Double Elimination adds another round, and really only allows us to get a "third place" person. I do not think we should do this, as we probably won't even have nough money to GIVE a third place person a prize, so it's a bit of a waste, and I think those who lose would rather go home or play casual matches with their limited deck or casual decks or whatever.
I strongly suggest we do Single elimination, as it goes faster (3 matches), and comes down to a final match. And, uh, yeah, i's kind of stupid to double elimination for nothing.

What set?
Either: 3 Ravinca: City of Guilds, or 1 of each Kamigawa set, or something else. Please let me know your preference! We will decide by Friday. You are required to provide your own unless you give me the money beforehand, in which case I'll go get them for you when I get mine.

Who is this WE you keep talking about?
Sean (Baker) and me, mainly. We'll also be two "judges" for the "event." If you have a question, come to either of us. If there's a question in my match, it gets directed to Sean, and if in his, it gets directed to me. It would be very nice to have a third "judge" so that in the case Sean and I end up in a match, there is a third to rule on it. If you (or someone you know who is interested in it) think you're qualified for doing that, then get in touch with me and I'll play a few games with you and see if you do, in fact, know your rules. :)

Price?
About ~$13 or so, OR bring the three boosters we're doing, and $1.50 towards prizes. With 8 people, that's just a $12 prize - enough to give the winner a Precon of their choice, OR, give the winner two boosters of their choice and the second placed person one booster of their choice, or something else. Talk to me about this.

Rules and crap and What if I'm a new player?
If you have ANY questions about the rules of a limited (draft) tournament, Magic: The Gathering, or even HOW to play, contact me. I've got... lots of free time between now and Sunday.

What I need from you

IMPORTANT

If you or ANYONE ELSE you know is interested in participating in this and/or being our Third Judge, please contact me!
Please, also, while doing that, say your preference on:
-Time/Date
-Rochester vs Normal draft
-Single vs Double elimination
-3 Ravinca Boosters vs 1 of each Kamigawa set vs ???(you submit one - and no, we are not doing a Homelands, Prophecy, Legions draft)
-Prizes - $1.50 each towards it vs $2 vs $2.50 vs. $3.00 (the more the merrier I say! But to keep it affordable, we're setting it at $1.50 unless there's enough will to move it higher)

It'll be a lot of fun, it's just getting it organized that we have to do.

UPDATE:

Time changed a week ahead and stuff.

People currently "signed up:"
-Seth
-Sean
-Calen
-James
-Eric
-Paul
-Wesley
-????

Yes, that's right - just one more person away from being able to actually have a draft. :D
Please realize that if more than 8 people are "signed up," then we will (of course!) accomidate you.

Also:

For those wondering what the new mechanics will be like or wanting a refresher on the game, I think this Friday or something I'll be heading to Ancient Wonders to purchase some of the newer stuff. If anyone would like to come with me and try it out, it'll be a great way to (re)learn and prepare for the draft. :P
