Because it is everywhere
Twilight. Not the sort of book I would normally read. But I read it and part of the second book. They were so boring I found myself checking to see how many pages I had left to go through. That is why I quit reading the second book, it felt like a school assignment I was being forced to complete and I was reading this for fun.
If you like stupid, over the top, trashy, stupid, romance novels then maybe you'll think these books are funny. Everyone else? Don't read them.
Bella? The main character and girl who is described as 'plain'? She has a vampire, a werewolf, plus several normal boys panting after her. It can't be her personality because hey, she doesn't have much of one. And the whole 'it's just because she's the new girl' thing does really seem plausible to me. The werewolf part I've only read spoilers about, but it would fit with the pattern.
Edward? The so hot vampire that is Bella's Twu Wuv? Is a stalker. A creepily perfect stalker. Um, maybe this is just me, but if vampire told me he was watching me while I slept, I would go get something to defend myself with. Not go 'OMG THAT IS SO ROMANTIC!'. No matter how hot the guy is, it's just creepy.
Then again the whole relationship seemed forces to me. And unhealthy. Bella is doing the whole 'I can't live without you thing'. Plus there isn't a lot of chemistry between Bella and Edward either. Bella just doesn't have any personality at all so something like that doesn't work. She's fond of playing the helpless maiden though. Maybe that appeals to a hundred year old vampire who hasn't matured past a teenage mentality.
Now, I like Fushigi Yugi despite Miaka, but Bella is more annoying than said Priestess is. At least Miaka has a personality. Yet, for some reason, Twilight has a movie coming out. It scares me that so many people actually like this book. It reminds me of a mary-sue self-insert fanfiction piece!
