A couple who live near us came through my line today.  Incidentally, Tom's father built our house decades before we bought it, so there's another connection, too.  We got to talking about college selection, and how scary it is.  Their daughter is a senior, and they're having a bit of trouble because "all her friends are going to Ivy League schools, as they've already decided, and for them, money is no object."  Tom and Mary had The Conversation with their daughter last night, which resulted in tears on her part.  Oh, I said, she's decided you're the worst killjoys ever, yes?  And they said, that's exactly what she's decided.
I remember that process and how painful it was.  Our daughter is lucky that things turned out as they did.  I also feel we are lucky in that she's so motivated and well-directed.
