As part of my project to list all the books we own and organize them, I've run across some Things I've Meant For Years To Read.  Currently, I'm reading Nora Ephron's Wallflower at the Orgy.  It's a collection of essays she wrote between 1967 and 1980, and it starts out with the preface written in 1970.  She notes that journalism, by then, had become so much more about the reporter and so much less about the subject and the reporting itself.

"We are now in an era when the I-lost-my-laundry-while-covering-Yalta school of reporting has become an epidemic; when serious books that involve reporting often tend to be infused with the author's admiration of his own investigative techniques; when the narcissism in the press almost outstrips the narcissism elsewhere in the country."

Oh my God, that's in 1970.  God only knows what she'd do with today's journalism.

Go, Nora, you go with your bad self!
