I mentioned to the manager of the meat department yesterday that Tuesday I did the ribs in the recipe that's in the latest Menu magazine, and he responded that he's selling cases of the raw meat that goes into the recipe. Which he finds odd, as the peeps at our store are fairly well off, don't like to put much effort into cooking (they like to take things out already made), and that recipe is time-consuming and takes a bit of effort. We're talking two and a half hours at least, but man, the results are worth it! They absolutely fell off the bone.
I sold ten bottles of our new yogurt-based Ranch salad dressing Friday, in a two-hour span. I was startled. I had them in a plastic tote filled with ice, and I kept turning around and discovering that another one was missing! It was as if there were gremlins in the area. To showcase the dressing, I cut up some veggies. Halved grape tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, made cucumber into shoestrings with a mandolin, diced red sweet peppers. I like to prepare veggies, and I was amazed at the response I got from customers. Quite a few asked if there was anything on the veggies before I put the dressing on. No, that was just their own juices. Weird. More than one person remarked, "They look so nice all cut up like that". Oh my, people, what is with you? I did, however, get a new top for my demo table this week. A luscious turquoise color, it really sets off the colors of veggies such as I had yesterday. You could see its color through the Pyrex dish I used for the veggies.
I finally got a new cutting board this week. The previous demo-person left nothing in the way of boards except these cheesy thin, flexible things I like to use at home, but which aren't really up to the use they get in this job.
Last week I cooked hot dogs one day. Grilling in the middle of the store is a little weird. Friday I used a new, better electric grill to cook asparagus, and it was delicious. No comparison between the new Cuisinart and the old Hamilton Beach.
Yesterday was a little weird. Pomegranate-blueberry smoothies in the morning, then I was beckoned to the front of the store where, as I had been told I would, I hawked copies of a cd while some of the artists who recorded it sang the one and only song it contained. It's for a noble cause, to raise money for the Clarence Town Memorial Fund, to help create a memorial in honor of all those affected by February's terrible plane crash (Continental 3407). However, one song? Yikes, it made for a rough two hours. I tried my heart out, and we sold 29 copies. That's about what everyone else has done so far. And after doing that, I still had one more demo to do. Arghhh.
We're pretty sure one of the cats bagged a leftover chicken breast night before last. Ray never found it in the baking pan to put away in the fridge, and no one of us three humans ate it. Oh boy, I hope no one becomes sick from eating something they shouldn't, like bones.
Ray has been wonderful lately. Last night he took one look at me when I came home and offered to buy dinner takeout, which was a huge blessing. Tonight he made dinner from stuff already in the fridge, just as I'd planned to do. Taco salads with the protein element provided by lentils I cooked, oh, maybe a week ago.
Thank you, Ray.
Oh my, I am exhausted. Glad I have the next three days off.
