This Saturday is
Thunder Over Louisville. Thunder is a 6-hour air show followed by (one of) the largest displays of fireworks in North America, and is the kickoff to Derby season.
Among the
many, many planes flying on Saturday are the Blue Angles, and an F-22 Raptor Demonstration team. Today some of them are practicing. I expect this will continue up 'til Saturday. They fly so fast that by the time I hear them, they are halfway across the sky ahead of their (very very loud) sound.
At least I'm not downtown? Thunder takes place in downtown Louisville, mostly over the river, but to get to the river the planes often fly directly over downtown. Some years they even do a stealth approach between the buildings. I find this both creepy and cool.
Starting this week, and lasting until about 24 hours after the Kentucky Derby (which is always held the first Sunday in May), it is exorbitantly expensive to travel to, and stay in, Louisville. The Derby is horse racing. Rich people own horses. The Derby is the most famous 3 minutes in sports, and it's a party, so famous people like to come see the racing and join the party. Locals rent out their houses and leave town for the week of the Derby, or sometimes for the entire Derby season. I plan on staying - it's my first year here and I'm curious to see how it goes.
