From sciam.com, the winners & honorable mentions from the 2008 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition, Life Viewed through the Microscope. As the introduction says, "Images use light microscopes to portray extraordinary images of biological specimens. In its fifth year, the competition honors superior images of living organisms or their components attained with the help of light microscopy." Me, I say, "Pretty!"

My favorites are #8, the amazing structure of a "hydra bug" (Trichodinia pediculus), #14, the glowy rings of a juvenile sea squirt ( Ascidiella aspersa). The fairy fly (#1), the petrified wood (#2), and the lobster eggs (#17), are all very pretty, too.

Which ones do you like?

Also, I'd very much like to see this British art installation of an apartment-made-grotto-of-copper-sulphate crystals (blue!). Sadly, the article only has one photo, but you can see that photo & read about the art project here
