Titania is blooming!

Aug 07, 2007 23:11

Titania has opened! The titan arum, or corpse flower, (Amorphophallus titanum) is one of the largest blooms in the world. One of the seedlings at the UC Berkeley botanical garden is in bloom. The bloom opened this morning. Blooms typically last for 2-4 days, but they fertilized this one by hand this afternoon, and it may already be closing. I've never seen one before - I missed the last bloom, approximately two years ago. I'm going tomorrow. I hope it is still open when I get there.

But I'm a little ashamed to admit that I'm just fine with the fact that the smell will not be as strong on the second day of flowering. I'm not a big fan of the scent of rotting flesh, no matter how useful it is to the plant in question.
