set yourself apart thief! or else become the common thief that everyone else is all too pleased to be. when i came upon your path, the diamond himself had already crept up the stairs to see what you kept there. coming out with his arms full of all your copper pots and pans, the best silver, the tapestries spun by your mother and grandmother's loving hands. the glorious ideas paired with thoughts, 'i cannot be stopped, i'm doing this for Him!' and what a marvelous thought it is! but don't you see? it's just a thought, and it has been stolen because you never bothered to replace those old locks. 'well then, i'll dance with myself until His plan can begin.' but you're only sitting on the side, a boy in the foothills of connecticut, watching that nightime engine go by. sounding it's whistle to sting the ears. rushing the wind to stir the limbs. reminding every man that hears it, there are others on the move. you could be somewhere else.
and when i cut off all my hair, i thought of you.
and when i put on my new shoes, i thought of you.
and when i hear that strong voice of the south sing out 'it made the river taste like whiskey,' i thought of you, my brother bear. because, though you left that far behind, you've made paw prints of a different kind. in the mud on the bank of some big city river that will still lead to the wasting your life.
and all that i have left to speak is, become
and all that we have left to be is,
one.
(many thanks to eric jason for his brilliant idea of Lucifer as a 'diamond').
