When she'd first suggested it, Ned had turned pale; he'd stammered that having his eyes closed around her was the worst of bad ideas.

She didn't press the issue. She let the Brontë sister do it for her. Still, it took two months of rereading the book to each other - over mugs of steaming tea, with Digby curled between their armchairs - before he acquiesced. He made her promise to pay enough attention for the both of them, and for his own part vowed not to move an inch while they played.

"I must be delusional as well as blind," he said now, softly. She loved the way his voice curled around her in the friendly quiet of his living room, loved watching the fluttering shadows his eyelashes made on his cheeks as he sat. He was nervous.

"Not delusional," she reassured him, rubbing her cheek into his knee. She watched his fingers twitch, just barely, against one armrest, and pressed a kiss to the top of one thigh. "It is I, Mr. Rochester."

She expected him to let loose a laugh, but when she looked up he was more serious than ever - eyes closed, mouth set - and that stilled her own giggle in her chest.

"What sweet madness is this?" he hissed, his voice low. Chuck shivered.

"It is no madness," she replied, and kissed his other knee.

"Janet?" he asked, needy in the waiting air. It wasn't her name, but the sound of him calling her danced across her spine all the same.

"I'm here," she whispered.

"I am sorry you have to see me like this, blind and infirm," he told her quietly. She hadn't dared to hope he'd be so good at this. "I don't know if you can love me ... this way. I might - I almost - I almost hope you are a dream."

Chuck didn't think Edward Rochester had ever uttered those words, but she did what Jane would do: She wrapped her arms around his legs, she buried her head in his lap, she thought she would love him no matter how he was.

She couldn't touch his skin, but she could feel the warmth of his body underneath her. It was enough, for so many things - enough to awaken her. Enough to make her crazy. Enough for now. Enough for ever.

"I'm here," she repeated. "And I'll never leave you again. Well - kind of. I'll be right back."

She made a dash for the plastic wrap.
